Approximately 160 students are taught Microbiology in the 2nd year of the B. Sc. degree, followed by 150 students in 3rd Year, and 30-40 students in the 4th year honours course. The Department also directs a denominated B. Sc. degree in Environmental Science (15 students per year), and is active in the teaching of two other denominated B. Sc. degrees, Biotechnology (20 students per year) and Marine Science (20 students per year). The Department of Microbiology has a large postgraduate school with approximately 35 students taking postgraduate degrees annually. Postgraduate courses include the Higher Diploma in Applied Sciences (Microbiology) (15 students annually), and the M. Sc. in Biotechnology (8 students annually). All departmental staff direct active research groups with research-based M.Sc. and Ph.D. postgraduate positions available each year.
