Detroit Schools Takeover Approved By Michigan Legislature Following the passage last week, by the michigan House of Representatives, from public to private and parochial schools, as is being done in Milwaukee. http://www.wsws.org/articles/1999/apr1999/det-a06.shtml
Extractions: 6 April 1999 Following the passage last week, by the Michigan House of Representatives, of a final version of the "school reform bill" aimed at taking over the Detroit Public School system, Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer moved quickly to remove the incumbent school board. In what one newspaper columnist described metaphorically as the "night-of-the-long-knives," the mayor demanded the resignation of the entire outgoing board last Friday, within hours of Governor John Engler's signing of the reform legislation. By the following Wednesday, members of the defunct board had vacated their offices and turned in their keys to the mayor. While the new hand-picked board has not yet adopted any policies, its composition confirms that Archer, Engler and the state legislature are moving to tailor the public school system to the needs of big business. The seven-member board includes William Beckham, the president of the business-oriented New Detroit and an adviser to former US President Jimmy Carter; Frank Fountain, vice-president of DaimlerChrysler; Pam Aguirre, CEO of Mexican Industries of Michigan, one of the largest minority-owned auto parts manufacturers; Detroit Deputy Mayor Freeman Hendrix; Dr. Glenda Price, president of Marygrove College; and Marvis Coffield, director of a non-profit social service agency called Operation Get Down who also owns a small business.

Extractions: By MARY JOHNS EagleHerald staff writer mjohns@eagleherald.com MARINETTE Changes at St. Thomas Aquinas Academy will mean more expenses for Marinette Public Schools. Three months ago, academy officials announced St. Mary's School in Peshtigo, one of three academy schools, would cater strictly to younger students while intermediate students will attend Holy Family School in Marinette. By state law, public school districts must transport parochial school students within the district. "If Catholic schools in Marinette and Peshtigo offered the same grade levels, we wouldn't be obligated," said Nancy Hipskind, Marinette's superintendent, at a Board of Education finance meeting on Monday. But the academy has split its schools and that is likely to cost the Marinette school district at least $10,000 to $13,000 more per year in transportation costs. Some younger students will leave school at noon, which adds to the expenses. "We have to respect their school time and their calendar," Hipskind noted.

Extractions: The first diocesan school organized outside of Detroit was the school affiliated with the newly dedicated Church of St. Mary. It was begun January 15, 1846 with a small group of Sisters under the guidance of Fr. Louis Gillet, the pastor. The Sisters would soon be known as Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM). The nuns taught their young female charges within their own house until the following year when a two-story wooden frame school was built. The old church bell of St. Antoine found a new home atop this building and remains in the IHM Museum today. The end of the first school year was August 2, when the "distribution of premiums by the Bishop" took place. The young boy pupils met in a brick building opposite St. Mary Church, and were instructed by a Mr. Thomas Digue. The schools remained under the guidance of the Redemptorist Fathers, until their departure from Monroe in 1855. The Redemptorists had helped maintain the schools by their mission work. That and the Sisters' dowries had been used for improvements. Tuition was minimal and was the only steady source of income. Records indicate few boarders and about two hundred day students, although probably not at one time. Several parishioners had complained that the Sisters were a financial burden and the Sisters wrote back from Pennsylvania that the attitude was different there. No salaries were paid to the Sisters for many years, and the parish, unlike those outside Monroe, did not have the added expense of housing and utilities.

As soon as he ceased to offer the Indians material inducements, they commenced to move back in small and large parties just as they had left. The government could not afford to leave them without any supervision, so they re-manned the fort and asked the Jesuits to take up their labours again. Father Marest was the first to return and take up his quarters in the old mission. Until 1741 only a temporary establishment was maintained. In 1712, under De Louvigny, the French built the fort across the Straits, in the neighbourhood of the present Mackinaw City. Gradually relations between the missionaries and the government again became normal. About the year 1741 a chapel and dwelling for the missionary were built within the stockaded fort. In 1761 the English succeeded the French. Their unpopularity brought on the Pontiac massacre, 2 June, 1763. In 1779 Major De Peyster commenced a substantial stone fort on Mackinac Island. The chapel in the old fort was taken down and hauled over the ice and re-erected. The island became a great trading post and the gateway to western civilization. Father Du Jaunay attended the mission for a quarter of a century, but with the removal of the church to the island the
