Shortly after returning from his Civil War service as a cavalry commander in the Union Army, Copeland converted the home into The Orchard Lake Hotel. The Hotel closed in 1877 due to a national depression. When the hotel property became available Joseph Sumner Rogers, also a Civil War veteran gathered a few prominent Detroit investors and purchased the property for a military academy. The Michigan Military Academy opened in 1877 and closed in 1908. The music playing (if your browser is set to play music) is the MMA Adjutant March composed by cadet George W. Curtis (class of 1902).

Extractions: June 19, 1999 marked the 120th anniversary of General William Tecumseh Sherman's address to the graduating class of the Michigan Military Academy (M.M.A.). For its time, this appearance by Sherman had an enormous impact on the area surrounding Pontiac, Michigan. The Pontiac Bill Poster estimated the crowd on that summer day in 1879 to be 7 - 10 thousand people. The 5th Michigan Regiment Band, along with the Greater West Bloomfield Historical Society, recreated this event. Most of the original buildings and grounds of the M.M.A. are in use today by the schools referred to as Orchard Lake St. Mary's . The commemoration took place on the same date, June 19. Mr. Chris Evans, a noted historian of Heath, OH, presented a composite of Sherman's after-war remarks. The evening began with a lawn concert performed by the 5th Michigan Regiment Band. In 1877, Captain Joseph Sumner Rogers, a wounded Civil War veteran from Maine, opened the Michigan Military Academy at Orchard Lake near Pontiac. The institution was modeled after the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. Although the school never received any state support, it attained a national reputation. In 1889, an official U.S. Army report claimed that the academy "maintains its place as the leading military institution of the country, outside of West Point." Graduates included Sewell Lee Avery, future board chairman and president of the Montgomery Ward department store and Edwin Baruch Winans Jr., who commanded a brigade in World War I and served as superintendent at West Point. Local Legacies Congressional Nominations: To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must receive a nomination from an authorized nominating source. As a Representative, I can nominate applicants from my Congressional district who meet the following eligibility requirements established by law. Each applicant must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed the 23rd birthday - must be a U. S. citizen, unmarried, not pregnant and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents. General Admission Standards: Before nominating an applicant, Members of Congress evaluate each applicant's overall qualifications. The four academies, Air Force, Army, Navy, and Merchant Marine, consider evidence of character, scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, medical fitness, goals and motivation in determining each nominee's "whole person" evaluation.
