Hort 306 - Lecture 30 Lindley s formal education lasted only through age 16 but his astounding ability Bailey was born in 1858 in South Haven, michigan and was the youngest http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/history/lecture30/lec30.html
Extractions: Origins of Horticultural Science The origin of horticultural science derives from a confluence of three events: the formation of scientific societies in the 17 th century, the creation of agricultural and horticultural societies in the 18 th century, and the establishment of state-supported agricultural research in the 19 th century. Two seminal horticultural societies were involved: The Horticultural Society of London (later the Royal Horticulture Society ) founded in 1804 and the Society for Horticultural Science (later the American Society for Horticultural Science ) founded in 1903. Three horticulturists can be considered as the Fathers of Horticultural Science: Thomas Andrew Knight, John Lindley, and Liberty Hyde Bailey. Miller was Gardener to the Worshipful Company of Apothecaries at their Botanic Garden in Chelsea and is known as the most important garden writer of the 18 th century.
Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Leeward Islands Dry Forests (NT0220) The West Indies have about 200 endemic genera; the largest Wallenia has 30 species London Macmillan education LTD. Pregill, G., D. Steedman, S. Olson, http://www.worldwildlife.org/wildworld/profiles/terrestrial/nt/nt0220_full.html
Extractions: This dry forest ecoregion is comprised of several relatively small land areas on islands in the Caribbeans Leeward Island Group. Due to the small geographic size and proximity to the more densely populated coastal regions, these forests are particularly prone to degradation and disturbance. Centuries of deforestation and intensive agricultural use have resulted in the alteration of much of the original forest cover and contributed to a subsequent loss of species richness. A relatively high degree of island-endemism is a characteristic that these dry forests share with many other forests in the Leeward Islands Group. Conservation measures vary significantly from one island to another while most suffer similarly from population-related development, agricultural encroachment, hunting, and limited enforcement of wildlife and environmental legislation. Location and General Description This ecoregion covers small portions of the Caribbeans Leeward Islands. It is commonly found as a mid-gradient forest type between the xeric coastal regions and the higher-relief inner-island moist forests. This ecoregion is characterized by moderate relief and rainfall, and covers all of St. Eustatius, the central portion of Barbuda, interior portions of Montserrat, and small coastal areas on Anguilla and Antigua.
