U.S. Metric Association (USMA) The process of changing measurement units to the metric system (SI) is called Conversions between unit systems are a poor way to learn the metric system http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/
Extractions: (USMA) The U.S. Metric Association (USMA), Inc., with headquarters in Northridge CA, is a national non-profit organization, founded in 1916. It advocates U.S. conversion to the International System of Units which is known by the abbreviation SI (ess-eye). SI is also called the modern metric system . The process of changing measurement units to the metric system (SI) is called metric transition or metrication This site contains information on the SI metric system and information on the status of metric transition (metrication) in the United States. Information is also available on USMA's accomplishments, activities, and resources, as well as links to non-commercial Websites with additional metric system information. Conversions between unit systems are a poor way to learn the metric system, and conversion factors (or numbers converted with inappropriate precision) can make the metric system look complicated. Therefore we do not supply any unit conversion utilities. However a unit conversion utility/calculator is available in the external links section near the bottom of this page. Extractions: he'd have given us ten fingers!!" (Um ...) I get lots of letters from lots of Europeans and Asians and Australians that are very much like this one from Gumbo Pages reader and correspondent Dave Walker of England: "I use your recipe for jambalaya, and it's become essential eating at family camping trips and barbys. Thanks! Now i'm going to try the gumbo. Could you just clear one thing up? Being an Englishman, I'm not familiar with the measurement `quart'. Exactly how many pints are in a quart?" Ironic, isn't it? I think the system of measurement that I grew up with and that is still used almost exclusively in the United States is still called "The English System". Two pints in a quart, two cups in a pint, eight fluid ounces in a cup. Etc., etc., etc. This and many other similar enquiries keeps pounding into my head that my site is on the World Wide Web, and we silly Americans are practically the only people left who still measure this way. I decided that I really needed to put up a metric equivalents page. Some of these recipes (particularly the ones that come from my more elderly relatives) have measurements like "one stick of butter". Then, a guy from Finland writes and quite legitimately asks how much butter a stick is. (If only my great-aunt Nettie knew that guys in Finland were making her dirty rice recipe!)

All countries have adopted the metric system, including the U.S., and most countries (but not the U.S.) have taken steps to eliminate most uses of traditional measurements. However, in nearly all countries people still use traditional units sometimes, at least in colloquial expressions. Becoming metric is not a one-time event that has either happened or not. It is a process that happens over time. Every country is somewhere in this process of going metric, some much further along than others. the use of mc- land by the soendre in Bhutan
