The BFR should check that pilots can recognize critical weather situations, procure and use aeronautical weather reports and forecasts, determine fuel requirements, and plan for alternatives, the NTSB said." Extractions: Sponsored by the Weather Analysis and Forecasting Committee The National Weather Association's Publications Committee is pleased to continue providing the NWA Electronic Journal of Operational Meteorology, which was inaugurated in 2000 by the Weather Analysis and Forecasting Committee. The goal of the journal is to provide a web-based venue for the speedy publication of operational forecast topics with an emphasis on forms of media that are best shown via the web (e.g., image loops and color images). It is not intended for the Electronic Journal to take the place of the NWA Digest, but to complement it. The scope of "e-papers" will be similar to that of "Technical Notes" in the Digest and may encompass any topic relevant to operational hydrometeorology. The amount of text will be limited to 5 pages or less and authors may be contacted for additional information. E-papers will undergo a review process similar to that for the Digest. Papers are being solicited for the Electronic Journal. E-papers should be sent to Jeffrey Craven (

Meteorological phenomena are observable weather events which illuminate and are explained by the science of meteorology. Those events are bound by the variables that exist in Earth 's atmosphere. They are temperature pressure water vapor , and the gradients and interactions of each variable, and how they change in time. Extractions: German climatologist and geophysicist who, in 1915, published as expanded version of his 1912 book The Origin of Continents and Oceans . This work was one of the first to suggest continental drift and plate tectonics. He suggested that a supercontinent he called Pangaea had existed in the past, broke up starting 200 million years ago, and that the pieces ``drifted'' to their present positions. He cited the fit of South America and Africa, ancient climate similarities, fossil evidence (such as the fern Glossopteris and mesosaurus ), and similarity of rock structures. The American F. B. Taylor had published a rather speculative paper suggesting continental drift in 1910 which, however, had attracted relatively little attention, as had previous such suggestions by Humbolt and Fisher . The book was translated to English in 1924, when it aroused hostile criticism. The proposal remained controversial until the 1960s. Eric Weisstein

Extractions: The weather is fascinating, not least because here in the British Isles it changes so much! It's a great idea for Scouts to learn more about this subject as so many Scout activities are set outdoors and can be disrupted by bad weather. For example, Scouts can learn how to recognise the clouds that might produce rain, predict how cold it is likely to be at night, and know where best to pitch tents so they are sheltered from the wind. For more information about the Met Office, please visit www.metoffice.com . The site contains forecast information (including details of how to access specialised forecasts for outdoor activities) and information on the Met Office's education services. Packs containing a booklet and poster are available free of charge from the Information Centre on 0845 300 1818. These are limited to one per Troop whilst stocks last. Amongst other things, the booklet covers handy hints on how to recognise the clouds that might produce rain, predict how cold it is likely to be at night, and know where best to pitch tents so they are sheltered from the wind.
