Extractions: Photographs by Jimmy Deguara The LP supercell (low precipitation supercell) is a prize for the bag for any chaser. They may not be a common storm type in Australia but there now have been a few documented. But the sculptured beast observed on 1st February 2005 even had the lay person stand up and watch. After finally breaking the cap along the boundary, I stood in awe as the sun hid behind the solid anvil - the knuckles exhibiting a powerful burst. Geoff and I raced to be in position near Penrith. The site was absolutely breathtaking - stcked plated with multiple inflow region and a wall cloud centering the base. This storm was particularly active with bolts decending from the updraft and anvil. Reports of hail with diameters to 7cm were suggested from this storm.

ECPC/NCEP Global To Regional Weather Forecasts Global to regional forecasts of the fire weather index (Appendix) and precipitation Preprints of the Ninth Conference on Fire and Forest meteorology, http://www.fire.uni-freiburg.de/fwf/ecpc2.htm
Extractions: Global to Regional Fire Weather Forecasts (IFFN No. 17 - July 1997; updated 17 June 1999) Weather forecasts at short to extended time ranges and global to regional space scales could be more effectively utilized for wildland fire management. An experimental modeling system, developed at NCEP for making short-range global to regional weather forecasts, is currently being used to make and disseminate experimental global to regional, fire weather forecasts focused on Southern California. This fire weather forecasting system could be easily transported anywhere else in the world. A description of current and planned products is provided below. Background Improved fire weather forecasts are needed at a variety of time and space scales. At large space and time scales, accurate fire weather forecasts have potential for the long range planning of allocation of scarce resources. At smaller time and space scales accurate fire weather forecasts have potential use in alerting, staging and planning the deployment of fire crews and equipment. At the smallest time and space scales, accurate fire weather forecasts can be helpful in fighting fires as well as determining optimal periods for setting prescribed silvicultural fires (Fosberg and Fujioka 1987). Extractions: Here we go again. Hurricane Rita is barreling her way towards the Texas coast, packing winds of 165 mph!! However, there is a shred of "good" news. Rita is expected to weaken to at least a category 4 storm before making landfall this weekend. Currently, the storm is situated over very, very warm ocean waters with temperatures in the mid to upper 80's. That, combined with a very low-shear upper atmospheric environment, is allowing Rita to blossom. As Rita continues westward, the waters will become a little cooler, and the storm will lose a bit of its punch before making landfall. A major hurricane is still expected...at least category three, likely category four. WOW. Well, folks...this might be it. The storm that slams New Orleans. Meteorologists have talked about it for years - the worst case scenario of a category 5 hurricane landfalling in SE Louisiana with a direct impace on New Orleans, and it appears that this scenario is about to be realized in the next 24 hours. Right now, Hurricane Katrina has sustained winds of 160 mph and is slowing making a turn to the northwest. This hurricane has been hell to forecast. It was expected to turn to the north Friday, but instead decided turned southwest, then headed west across the Gulf of Mexico. I think everyone was surprised and a little shocked by the turn of events.
