Extractions: The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center's mission is to initiate and conduct archaeological research and public education programs in partnership with Native Americans and institutions with common interests. The Center is located in southwestern Colorado near the town of Cortez and close to Mesa Verde National Park. EDUCATION The Crow Canyon education department, using experiential education methods, engages learners of all ages in an inclusive and dynamic study of the human past. The staff works toward this goal by teaching about past and present cultures of the Southwest, investigating student learning, and communicating the Center's educational methods and theories to others. The work of the department is guided by a respect for Native American peoples and is conducted in collaboration with other communities. Archaeology, education, and applied anthropology provide the academic foundation for Crow Canyon programs. Crow Canyon's innovative education programs not only provide instruction in archaeology but also involve the lay public in the actual research process. This first-hand approach increases awareness of, and appreciation for, our rich cultural heritage, while providing broad-based support for archaeological research and preservation. Through Crow Canyon's programs, students of all ages gain an understanding of culture, Native American history, archaeological research, human interaction with the environment, and the importance of cultural resource preservation.

Extractions: Main [Click for full image] Found on the AIM Council on Security and Intelligence web page is this 1994 letter from Susan Shawn Harjo of the Morning Star Institute regarding the ethnic identity of Ward Churchill, once a member of one tribe or another, and now fairly exposed as a fake, a phony and a fraud. (This of course will result in his speaking fees increasing faster than his bookings at colleges around the country and in France.) Still, it is interesting to see that Churchill's poseur status has been known for well over a decade. By everyone, it would seem, other than his employers and publishers. What follows is a transcription of part of the text of the letter discussing a call Harjo received from one Regina Brave. Ms Brave asserted: "...that she knew WC [Ward Churchill] when he surfaced in Boulder as an Indian of several other tribes before he settled on Cherokee/Creek/Metis, and that she never bought into his assertion that he was an Indian of any kind; 2) that another of the 'judges in Bellngham, Washington shared her concerns, and another, a woman from Canada, was on a scholarship at the University of Colorado and living with WC and his wife; 3) that she has heard WC claim that he provided firearms going into Wounded Knee in 1973; and 4) that she overheard WC tell another white man ... that he was an expert witness in the Bernard Escamillo trial in Council Bluffs, and that she called one of the men associated with the trial that said WC was not a defense witness, but that he recognized WC's name as a prosecution witness... From the way she relates a story, it could go either way...but it is a lead to follow tht might have documentable clues about not only what but who WC is.

Main The American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) recently announced that University of New Mexico Biology student Susan Christy Sanchez Monzon is one of the 10 recipients for its 5th annual ASPB Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. Monzon's project is titled, Activation of red form I algal Rubisco from Plocamium cartilagineum. UNM Biology Professor David Hanson, an ASPB member, sponsored her. Im so honored to be a recipient of the 2005 ASPB Summer Undergraduate Fellowship, said Monzon. This is a tremendous commitment that will allow me to expand my horizons in plant biology. The $3,000 fellowship will permit Monzon to devote full-time effort to a lab project for a 10-week period this coming summer. The award also includes $500 for lab supplies, a free membership in ASPB, and travel grant assistance for Monzon to attend the 2006 ASPB Plant Biology Meeting in Boston. With this undergraduate fellowship opportunity, ASPB offers students experiences to help them consider pursuing advanced degrees and careers in plant biology. The ASPB SURF program was co-chaired by ASPB members Mark Brodl, Trinity University and Mary Williams, Harvey Mudd College. They agreed that this was the most difficult year ever to choose recipients from the many outstanding projects presented. A complete description of the SURF program and the project descriptions can be viewed at the ASPB Web site:

Sure enough, Puerto Rico is host to one of the most spectacular Bioluminescent Bays in the world. Every object that enters the water in this unusual bay begins to glow in the night. The mysterious blue-green light is created by microorganisms, which thrive in this unique bay, also known as Phosphorescent Bay. The bay contains up to 720,000 single-celled bioluminescent dinoflagellates per gallon of water. These half-plant, half-animal organisms emit a flash of bluish-green light when agitated at night, lighting up submerged objects with an aqua-green aura. The high concentration of these creatures called Pyrodimium bahamense, in case you were wondering can create enough light to read a book from.
