Graduate Exam Questions Hunter Model Lesson Plans Adapted from a lesson prepared by Brad Heltsen, ED 381 Hunter Model 1 Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: Middle School Level 7 Aim: Students will to use manipulatives in order learn new concepts. Goal: After using manipulatives, students will be able to draw on retrievable mental images to solve more complex or related problems. Note: This lesson is about the ability to transfer concrete experiences as a foundation for future learning. For this unit we will be using manipulative materials to help students understand the properties and operations of fractions in mathematics. Pattern blocks are the most helpful and common manipulative used to model fractions. Materials: Multiple sets of pattern blocks Anticipatory Set ( Note: Many students choosing to use this model fail to realize that any scripted dialogue must be accompanied by an activity! In the sample below the author states that prior to the main activity students and teacher will be reviewing and discussing prior knowledge . Please make sure your lesson includes an activity that gets the learner(s) set for the body of the lesson. That is the intent of the "anticipatory set," to get the learner to anticipate the lesson.)

Extractions: Object of the lesson Content/Procedure: This project is designed to be used as a warmup activity during the 12 days preceding Christmas. On the first day give the students a copy of the student worksheet . Post the price of the first gift. Students should understand that they will need to purchase a partridge in a pear tree for each of the 12 days. On the chart students will enter 12 for the number of days given, 12 for the number of gifts needed, the price of one gift item posted by the teacher, the cost of this gift (12 x price), and the total to date. On the second day 2 turtledoves are given. This gift is given for 11 days, and so 22 doves are needed (2 x 11 = 22). The price of the gift (a pair of turtle doves) is posted by the teacher, and the students then calculate the cost of this gift (22 x price of one dove or 11 x the price of a pair of doves). The total to date will be the sum of the cost for days 1 and 2.
