Games link learning to goals and roles. Games are multimodal. Games support early steps into a new domain.

We invite you to visit with classroom teachers and the principal about specific activities and experiences at your school. Parent involvement makes all the difference in student achievement. Thank you for supporting and encouraging your child! Reading By the end of third grade, students show a distinct preference for fiction or nonfiction, books on a theme, or books by a particular author. They make comparisons and links to other texts or illustrations. Many children pursue interests through books. Fables, myths, poetry and essays are types of fiction reading that students are introduced to in third grade. Nonfiction reading may include: encyclopedias, diaries and biographies. Students learn to use the following text features: introductions, timetables, parentheses, checklists, glossaries, subheadings, tables, picture captions and graphs. Teachers will use many methods to determine the progress of each student: Running records - individual evaluations of student oral reading and their comprehension

Extractions: Fifth grade provides a transition for the students into the Middle School. We retain the homeroom structure and the student's schedule is almost identical to that in fourth grade. Homeroom allows the teacher to know each student well and to provide opportunities for guiding the student's social and academic growth. We use the homeroom structure to create an atmosphere of mutual respect so that each student's uniqueness is acknowledged and nurtured at the same time that a spirit of cooperation and cohesiveness is fostered. We strive to create an environment in which: Everyone is special and no one is privileged. The general goals of fifth grade are: To stimulate each student's desire to learn and foster a positive attitude toward school. To provide a secure social environment so that students can have ease of mind at school. To promote mutual respect among students as well as between students and adults, and while offering guidance, give students opportunities for resolving problems on their own. To offer learning activities that give students opportunities for success and that challenge them to improve their skills and expand and deepen their knowledge.

Create your learning plan, read the standards, and find tips for getting grants. Grades: This handbook for students in grades 5-6 provides detailed and illustrated mathematical explanations of topics ranging from mental computation and problem solving to pre-algebra, probability, and geometry. The handbook is designed to complement student textbooks by offering alternative explanations of topics. It also serves as a resource for interdisciplinary projects with information on conversion tables, map reading, and ancient number systems, along with ideas for science fair projects. As a sample of the material, in one chapter students learn two alternative methods for multiplying whole numbers. In the first method, students multiply all of the individual digits and add the partial products to find the answer. In the second method, students break apart one of the factors into simpler numbers that are easier to multiply.

Extractions: A Global Learning Network Project Designed to Promote Collaborative and Critical Inquiry Addressing Key Math Concepts, Standards and Assessment Some teachers interested in beginning global learning network projects may ask, "What about the standards that I am accountable for? How do I have time to teach all the required subjects and still have time for another project?" Some teachers may want to begin a project, yet feel pressure about addressing standards. Meg Marino was one of the pioneers who began the "Connecting Math to Our Lives" Project at her school, and also had the same responsibility to meet standards. After looking at the activities which evolved from students' interests in the CMTOL project, we have seen that students experience many authentic ways of exciting learning. We have also seen that teachers who know the standards and curriculum for their grade levels can also readily address those grade level standards in a student-centered way. Finally, the authentic teaching and learning that takes places is also appropriate for differentiating instruction for all students as needed.
