Extractions: After a year of turmoil, self-doubt and recrimination, the Pittsburgh Public Schools board might be able to find a few moments of peace, however incomplete, in choosing from its current slate of candidates. Several board members say they can't go wrong with any of the four finalists for the Pittsburgh superintendency. The finalists are Gerald Dawkins, 56, superintendent of Saginaw Public Schools in Michigan; William Harner, 49, principal of Gainesville Middle School in Georgia; Christine Johns, 39, deputy superintendent of curriculum and instruction in Baltimore County Public Schools in Maryland; and Mark Roosevelt, 49, former director of the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education. All four were trained in high-profile management programs for urban superintendents, three of the four by the Los Angeles-based Broad Center for the Management of School Systems, which emphasizes innovation and competition in school management. All have track records of reforming schools and improving student achievement, according to board member Patrick Dowd. "We have an excellent pool of candidates from which to make this selection," Dowd said.
