It is for this reason that the Fair Housing Act and other federal and state laws were enacted to guarantee a right to a national housing market free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, and national origin. THE LAW Civil Rights Act of 1866 The Civil Rights Act of 1866 prohibits all racial discrimination in the sale or rental of property. Fair Housing Act The Fair Housing Act declares a national policy of fair housing throughout the United States. The law makes illegal any discrimination in the sale, lease or rental of housing, or making housing otherwise unavailable, because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin. Americans with Disabilities Act Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in places of public accommodations and commercial facilities.

Hundreds more will do so as the week progresses. ( Full story This is a watershed moment in history, and yet it is far from the end of the story. Legal challenges suggesting other states need not recognize these Massachusetts marriages have yet to be resolved. Advocacy to amend the constitution to prohibit such marriages will doubtless continue, and President Bush today reiterated what he calls an "urgent" need for such an amendment. In addition as I will explain Massachusetts' governor has invoked an old state law that he claims means out-of-staters cannot enter into same-sex marriages in Massachusetts. But whether this law will prevent out-of-state couples from marrying in Massachusetts, or, perhaps more importantly, invalidate their marriages if they do, remains to be seen.

It is taught by full-time University of Virginia law faculty, by visiting professors from other law schools, professors from other disciplines, and occasional visiting lecturers. Courses focus on the economic implications of judicial decision making, legal history and jurisprudence, interdisciplinary problems of law, biomedical science, the social sciences, and a comparative examination of foreign legal systems. Classes are held Monday through Friday. Three classes meet each day with required reading assignments. Attendance is mandatory. Classroom dress is casual, and informal discussions among participants and faculty are encouraged. Luncheon talks and discussions are conducted every week by professors from other disciplines and by visiting lecturers. Two literary works will be discussed each summer outside of normal classroom hours. Each participant will select a thesis topic by the close of the first session, and will be assigned a thesis advisor from the University faculty. Thesis topics will be selected after consultations with members of the law faculty. The thesis involves significant research and writing and reflects in quality and length the writing typically found in a law review article.
