Raiding parties of both colonists and Indians attacked each other's settlements, leveling small isolated settlements and killing traders. Unfortunately for the Indians, they were outnumbered, and the war was merely a war of attrition for them. Strangely enough, during the war, Roger Williams found a link to the colony he had never possessed earlier. Massachusetts Bay repeatedly sent soldiers and supplies to Williams's fledgling colony at Narragansett Bay to help defeat the Indians in his area. However, the most lethal weapon in the settlers' arsenal was smallpox. The Indians, never having been exposed to the disease before, had no immunity built up. The disease took a horrible toll on the tribe, and by 1640 the tribe practically had been wiped out.

Many Americans filing their income taxes are appalled by the large amount of earnings taken by the government. The income tax is also appalling from a civil liberties perspective because of its inequity, complexity and intrusiveness. While President Bush cut taxes, the tax code remains a monument to social engineering run amok. Help may be on the way with some congressional leaders planning to move ahead with reforms next year to replace the income tax with a low-rate consumption-based tax. That would go a long way toward reducing the following civil liberties abuses of the current tax regime.

Extractions: HTML Text Emancipation is not available in every state in the United States. Where it is available, emancipation is a legal process by which minors can attain legal adulthood before reaching the age at which they would normally be considered adults (this is called the "age of majority"). The rights granted to legally emancipated minors might include the ability to sign legally binding contracts, own property, and keep one's own earnings. However, each state has different laws governing emancipation and some states simply have no law or legal process concerning emancipation. In states where minors wishing to become legally emancipated will have to break new legal ground. This page is designed to give minors information on the laws and available legal processes regulating emancipation in their state. The information is based on available state legal statutes and in some cases also includes information obtained from various legal aid organizations in that state. Some states have different legal terms for emancipation and can also differ in their definition of the rights granted to an emancipated minor.

The opinion in Gallup v. Alden establishes, for the first time in Massachusetts law, that before a court may commit an individual with mental illness, it must consider whether there is a less restrictive alternative to involuntary hospitalization. 1975 MPAP attorneys sue on behalf of mentally retarded residents of Belchertown State School to establish their a right to vote. The Supreme Judicial Court in Boyd v. Register of Voters of Belchertown orders the town to allow the residents to register to vote. Boyd is one of the first disability related voting rights cases in the United States. 1976 The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) awards a significant three year grant to MPAP together with the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and Hampshire College to investigate whether non-attorneys can be trained to represent hospitalized individuals with mental illness. MPAP expands its office at the Northampton State Hospital and recruits students from UMass, Hampshire, and Mt. Holyoke Colleges to train as advocates. MPAP managing attorney Steven Schwartz, University of Massachusetts Professor Stephan Arons and Hampshire College Professor Oliver Fowlkes are the leaders of the program.
