Massachusetts Family Institute TOP massachusetts LAW ENFORCER WARNS OF INTERNET DANGERS There are severalresources available to help families, educators, caretakers and community http://www.mafamily.org/Press Room Folder/Press Releases/PressRelease3.htm
Extractions: Newton, MA - It has become all too common and tragic, children stalked and abused by adult predators through "relationships" formed over the Internet. Daily we read of instances where the Internet is used in sinister ways often involving children. Many times, parents are the last to know that their children are involved in dangerous activities initiated from a home, school or local library computer. Internet crime against children is a growing problem that top law enforcers in the Commonwealth are taking seriously. The Executive Office of Public Safety has assembled a multi-faceted, multi-discipline task force to develop comprehensive programs and responses that protect Massachusetts's children. "The Internet provides many opportunities for education, information, communication and commerce. Unfortunately there are those who exploit technology for criminal purposes. The State Police and other law enforcement agencies are committed to investigating these crimes when they occur. However, we would rather see these crimes prevented. Therefore, parents of children and all users of this technology must take affirmative steps to protect themselves and reduce their chances of becoming victims. The first step is education," said Col. John D. Fava, Superintendent, Massachusetts State Police.

Extractions: PROJECT SUMMARY The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has received $100,000 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to transition its statewide system of policies and practices from a predominantly professionally driven "one-size-fits-all" model to one that routinely implements self-determination in terms of individuals' ability to define and chose their supports and to control the financial resources for those supports. Funding from the Foundation will serve as a catalyst to translate existing demonstration projects in systemic policy, procedure and practice toward the achievement of individual outcomes and statewide systems change. There are many examples throughout the Commonwealth where activities have been implemented which are designed to foster individuals making significant decisions about their supports. A consumer directed service procurement process gives the individual, and his/her family, decision-making control over the service package for the individual. Quite different than controlling small pots of family support dollars, the Consumer Directed RFP, as it is called, allows the individual to determine how his/her residential and day supports will be configured and by whom. Through another pilot we are examining how to allow individuals to seek providers, not based on a contracted slot basis, but on a qualified pool of providers basis. In this regard the dollars follow the individual and not a contract.

A group of foresters and landowners is trying to reverse this cycle by forming a cooperative enterprise. This article summarizes our approach and experiences during the start-up phase.
