Extractions: Internet Safety Massachusetts Family Institute recognizes that the Internet provides tremendous channels for education, information, communication and commerce. Unfortunately, it also unleashes dangers heretofore unfamiliar to families, educators, business leaders and law enforcement professionals. According to a report released in June 2000 by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children One in five young people who used the Internet regularly was exposed to unwanted sexual solicitations or approaches. One in four encountered unwanted pornography in the last year. One in 33 were "aggressively" approached, meaning contacted by phone or mail, asked to "rendezvous," or given money or gifts. Nearly a quarter of the children who reported their exposure were severely distressed and upset. A disproportionate number of those distressed were pre-teens, aged 10 to 13, "suggesting that younger youth have a harder time shrugging off such solicitations." The study's sponsors also note that fewer than four in 10 of the incidents are reported.
