Extractions: COUNCIL HOSTS FAMILY RESOURCE NIGHT Despite the snow, more than 75 parents attended the 4th annual Special Education Resource Fair January 19th at Brockton High School. Sponsored by the Special Education Parent Advisory Council, the fair was an opportunity for parents of students with disabilities to gather information on programs available through the Brockton Public Schools and to connect with service providers, government agencies and enrichment program organizers to find the best programs and opportunities to fit their child's needs. "This is a highly attended event that the parents ask for," said Special Education Director Joanne Malonson. "It's a nice way for parents to learn about what programs are available to them in the schools, and to also gather information about services and programs offered by agencies from around the state. We have a lot to offer." Parents were able to gather information from 27 agencies from Brockton and beyond during the fair, and to swap stories with one another. Sometimes, meeting other parents who have the same questions and challenges as you do is a help, said Doug Musto, whose 10-year-old son is a highly functioning autistic child. "This is great, I wish found it years ago," Musto said, cramming pamphlets into a plastic bag. "I'm here to gather information. I just want to see what services are offered, I want to find everything I can to help him."

Extractions: (SIRS) Research You Can Use Close-Up #6 Kathleen Cotton and Karen Reed Wikelund INTRODUCTION It is no wonder that parent involvement with the schools has become a major educational issue in the 1980s. This is an era of increasing concern about the quality of education in this country. States are taking a greater role in monitoring and maintaining academic standards. Communities are ever more watchful of the expense of public education. Local schools are concerned about continuing to provide high-quality teaching and other services with dwindling resources. And parents want assurance that their children will receive adequate preparation to lead rewarding adult lives. Is parent involvement a valuable, if largely untapped, resource for schools struggling to provide state-ofthe -art instruction with diminishing fundsa way to instill pride and interest in schooling, increase student achievement, and enhance a sense of community and commitment? Or is it one more responsibility to add to overburdened teachers and administratorsor even a threat to the autonomy and professionalism of the schools? This review of the literature on parent involvement examines these issues, focusing, in particular on the following five areas:

The goal is for students to become proficient in the second language and develop increased cultural awareness while reaching a high level of academic achievement. Students develop proficiency in the second language by hearing and using it to learn all of their school subjects rather than by studying the language itself. Parents who are considering an immersion program for their child usually have many questions. This digest provides introductory responses to some of the questions most commonly posed by parents.
