Anderson Cancer Center The Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center has won a five-year, $10 million government grant that will bring together national breast cancer experts to find new ways to halt metastasis, an elusive process that causes cancer cells to spread throughout the body and is the cause of death in most cancer patients. "New technologies and the revolution in gene science have jumpstarted our understanding of how breast cancer cells spread," says Saraswati Sukumar, Ph.D., Barbara B. Rubenstein Professor of Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and principal investigator of the grant. "Now, we are pooling our knowledge and resources to solve important problems plaguing every cancer patient of whether their disease will return and how to fight the spreading disease." The grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, will establish a Center of Excellence based at Johns Hopkins with collaborators at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and Genzyme Biotechnologies. Breast cancer survivors will actively participate in project development, oversight, and disseminating information on program goals and research results.

Extractions: The Technology in Maryland Schools (TIMS) Program, part of the Governor's Maryland Connected for Learning Initiative, provides each school that becomes part of the program with a complete wiring distribution system throughout the school building for transmitting voice, video, and data and/or provides hardware, software, and staff training. The technology is used to support student learning and instruction by (1) enabling students and teachers to access the Internet and World Wide Web directly from their classrooms and the library media center; and (2) allowing students and staff to communicate and interact electronically within the school building and with locations outside the school. With the passing of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) reauthorization bill, in FY 2003 the TLCF program will now be consolidated with several other technology programs under Title II, Part D - Enhancing Education Through Technology. Volunteer Parent Advocates Program MDLC is one of 11 members of the CityWide Education Coalition, a network of organizations that helps parents of Baltimore City special education students. The network was designed to address the many requests of Baltimore City families for assistance with the special education process. One of the key components of the network is the Volunteer Parent Advocate (VPA) program. VPAs are parents who have first-hand knowledge and experience advocating for their own child's education in Baltimore City Public Schools, and have volunteered to assist other families to resolve special education problems. VPAs are interested community members who can provide telephone support or go to school meetings with family members. The CityWide Coalition provides continuous training and support to assist VPAs in their efforts to help other families.

Library media center materials will be checked out by the library staff on the computer. Each student will be assigned a unique computer identification number. Most books may be borrowed from the school for 10 days. Reference materials may only be borrowed overnight and must be checked out at the end of the day. Students are expected to use school computers for educational purposed in support of the FCPS curriculum, and in an ethical, responsible and legal manner. Access will be denied to students who misuse this resource. Students will reimburse the library media center for any lost or damaged materials. Report cards will be held until obligations are met. During regular class hours, students must have a pass to be admitted to the media center and must sign in. Any student whose conduct is unacceptable will be sent back to class. Students may get a pass before school from the media staff to come to the library after eating lunch, if space allows. Students are welcome in the library before and after school hours. There will be no eating or drinking in the library. Materials relating to specific assignments may be photocopied with permission from the media staff. The media staff is available to help students with research or recreational reading needs.

Dr. Aiello is also the Head of Joslins Section on Eye Research and is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. His appointment in May, after two years as the Associate Director, continues the tradition of outstanding leadership at Joslins Beetham Eye Institute. The former director, Lloyd M. Aiello, M.D., is now Founding Director and continues to provide exceptional patient and staff education. He also continues his work as a principal investigator in the Section on Eye Research at Joslin and an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. Under his leadership, the Beetham Eye Institute grew and developed into one of the most highly regarded centers for treating diabetic eye disease in the world. Lloyd Paul Aiello, M.D., Ph.D., a third-generation ophthalmologist, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and received both his M.D./Ph.D. degrees at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Aiello joined the staff at Joslin in 1994 and has since been an integral part of the Beetham Eye Institute. Dr. Aiellos research focuses on eliminating vision loss resulting from diabetic retinopathy, one of the complications of diabetes. Dr. Aiello is active in numerous professional organizations. He has served as Chair for two Medical Science Review Committees of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the American Diabetes Association Lions SightFirst Diabetic Retinopathy Research Program and the National Institutes of Health-sponsored Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network.
