Thomas Kunkel, an award-winning author, former top newspaper and magazine editor and a national media critic, will become dean of the University of Maryland's College of Journalism, Provost Gregory L. Geoffroy announced Tuesday. Kunkel will take over July 1 from Reese Cleghorn, who will step down as dean after 19 years to become a full-time faculty member. Kunkel was a top editor at the San Jose Mercury News and Miami Herald before joining the University of Maryland in 1997 as editor and director of the Project on the State of the American Newspaper, a landmark magazine series published by the College-owned American Journalism Review University officials praised Cleghorn for making the College one of the best journalism schools in the country, and said Kunkel has the ability to take the school to the next level. "Tom has the vision, energy, intellect and passion to make the University of Maryland's journalism program the nation's best, and that is precisely our goal," Geoffroy said. The provost praised Kunkel as "a nationally recognized figure who has enormous depth and breadth of experience," pointing to his accomplishments in the worlds of newspapers, magazines and books.
