Extractions: Education Every child with a disability is entitled to a free appropriate public education (FAPE). The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which was passed in 1975 and most recently reauthorized in 1997, ensures access to public school for all children with disabilities. Children with disabilities are to be identified, evaluated and provided special education and related services in the least restrictive environment to meet their needs; and unless the IEP requires some other arrangement, the child should be educated in the school he or she would attend if they did not have a disability. Once the child's needs are identified, programs and services to meet those needs are specified in an individualized education program (IEP). IEPs are developed jointly by parents and educational personnel and implemented by local school districts (LEAs) according to the procedures mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and other legal authorities. Compliance with this process is overseen by state education agencies (SEAs), which provide assurances to the U.S. Department of Education that the objectives of IDEA are being met. Related services are an important component for school-aged children with disabilities. As defined by federal law, related services are intended to address the individual needs of students with disabilities, in order that they may benefit from their educational program. Occupational and physical therapy, school health services, and transportation, speech pathology and audiology, psychological services, recreation, including therapeutic recreation and social work services, and medical and counseling services, are all examples of related services that can help eligible students with disabilities participate more fully and successfully in the learning process.
