Extractions: Tangible Results, Cost-Effective Methods Since its founding in 1982, the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy has helped restore: Why "helped" restore? Because we don't take full credit for the restorations we've accomplished. We always work in cooperation with others. We work with landowners, volunteers, businesses, government and funding sources to keep costs down. By cooperating with and involving others, we leverage additional funding and volunteer help to accomplish our goals. In the process, we help many people become part of the process of helping wildlife. Return on Investment We strive to maximize the return on investment. We choose projects that result in quick, cost-effective, and lasting improvements for wildlife. The number of bald eagles, pine martens or other wildlife supported is the bottom line for us. The average cost of wetland restoration by the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy is about $250 per acre. The Conservancy spent $1,000 to restore 50 acres of wetland in Allegan County at the low cost of only $20 per acre. Ten miles away, a project we were not involved in spent $26,000 to make only 4.3 acres of marsh. Some developers and government agencies spend up to $100,000 per acre to create wetlands to replace those drained in the course of their work. Funds invested with the Michigan Wildlife Habitat Foundation result in tangible, cost-effective habitat projects with real benefits to wildlife.

White Tailed Sea Eagles can also be seen on Mull at Grass Point and from the hide on Loch Sunart. The best place to see Red Squirrels is outside the kitchen window of lodge number 7. We have a feeder here and 'Rusty' visits up to 3 times a day. For those of you not staying in number 7, the feeder can be seen from the car park. Pine Martens are also regular visitors to the lodges but like the Squirrel need a little enticement. This can be in the form of toast and jam left on the verandah in the evening.

Waabizheshi (marten), a sleek, furry spitfire, hisses and growls as researchers approach its trap camouflaged with pine boughs and snow. Its bright brown eyes stare out from the dark trap, bold and alert, letting everyone know this little guy means business. On this particular day, the trapped marten was Pale-face, a pine marten frequently captured on the Chequamegon side of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and named because of the light-colored fur on his head and face. After a quick prick with a needle containing an immobilizer, Pale-face lost his aggression and was lifted peacefully out of the cage to undergo testing. Unlike the martens larger relative, the fisher, whose populations have flourished, martens remain rare, seem not to be reproducing and are dispersing only minimally from reintroduction sites, says GLIFWC Wildlife Section Leader Dr. Jonathan Gilbert. In fact, the pine marten, once extirpated in Wisconsin as a result of over harvest and habitat loss, was reintroduced in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNF) by the late Dr. Ray Anderson in a collaborative effort between the USFS, the state of Wisconsin, and UW-Stevens Point. However, pine martens remain on Wisconsins threatened species list today.

Snuggled in a sleeping bag, sheltered by a snow hut, he heard a rustling at the entrance to his frigid abode. In from the cold bounded a brown, tube-shaped animal about the size of a house cat that eyed the startled human and then disappeared into the night. What Gehman encountered that night in 1985 was a fisher, an elusive member of the weasel family. The sighting was notable because the creature had not been seen in the area in more than half a century. For decades, the fisher and its smaller cousin, the marten, have been in decline in many parts of North America because of trapping, logging and habitat fragmentation. But these carnivores were largely overlooked because they are small and difficult to study.
