WASHINGTON (CNN) The U.S. Marine contingent in Afghanistan will be used to help hunt Taliban and al Qaeda forces on the move around Kandahar, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Monday. About 500 of an expected 1,000-plus Marines landed south of the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar on Sunday. They were quickly in action, with the Pentagon confirming reports Monday afternoon that U.S. helicopter gunships attacked an armored column near the airstrip they control. "They are not an occupying force," Rumsfeld said. "Their purpose is to establish a forward base of operations to help pressure the Taliban forces in Afghanistan, to prevent Taliban and al Qaeda terrorists from moving freely about the country." Rumsfeld said the base they have established could be used for humanitarian operations or for special operations troops, but won't necessarily be used to put more U.S. ground troops into Afghanistan.

" That observation was made to me by a young Marine crewman of an amphibious assault vehicle, an AAV. We were in a command version of the transport, and the officers were having a hard time getting the hang of opening and closing the heavy top hatches. From my vantage point, it looked more like someone was going to lose a head. The AAV, also known as an Am-track, is to the Marines what a Bradley fighting vehicle is to the Army, only the AAV does more than just run, gun and carry troops: It also floats.

Savidge discussed the military activity Thursday with CNN Anchor Paula Zahn. SAVIDGE: The U.S. Marines have secured the key city of Kut. Kut is located on the Tigris River. It is one of the last rivers you're going to be crossing before you get toward Baghdad. It's a very ancient and a very crucial city because of its geographic location. The military also thought it could have been a key city when it came to some sort of fight with the Republican Guard. It was the Baghdad Division of the Republican Guard that was headquartered in this particular region. However, [there are] no indications of heavy fighting, but certainly if you take a look over here, there [are] all the indications of a clear U.S. military Marine buildup already in this particular area.

Maj. James "Bo" Higgins, an intelligence officer with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, said the military campaign for Kandahar had reached "a culmination point." Higgins said no decision had been taken to commit U.S. Marines to the coming battle for Kandahar, but he said several forces were in play. Afghan opposition forces continued to move toward Kandahar from the north and southeast, with the number of U.S. Marines and other coalition forces building at a desert base southwest of Kandahar.
