Guestbook MACS May 2003 MACS or the Manitoba Academy of Chinese Studies is a federally registered charitable organization founded in Winnipeg in 1974 by a group of ethnic Chinese immigrant professionals mainly from the academic and medical fields. Its primary mission is the promotion of Chinese culture and the teaching of the Chinese language amongst Manitobans. Its main activity is a Chinese school that has some 180 students attending Mandarin classes every Saturday morning at Grant Park High School in Winnipeg. In addition to these classes that are from kindergarten to grade 10, MACS provides adult classes in beginner and intermediate conversational Mandarin. Other areas of instruction include Calligraphy, Chinese History and Literature, Chinese Yo-Yo and Chinese Folk Dance. Beginning in 2001, students passing the final exam of Senior I Class graduate from MACS with a certificate would make them eligible to write a challenge exam for Introductory Mandarin Language from the Asian Studies Center of the University of Manitoba. In the Cultural arena, MACS has over 40 adults taking Tai-Ji classes. It also has over 40 choir members (

Located 25 km. east of Leaf Rapids, the copper and zinc mine is one of the largest and most modern in Canada. Visitors may tour it during the summer months. The collection represents the identity of everyday Canadians, urban and rural, public and private, through the garments that they made, purchased and wore. Extractions: The Paleo-Indian period was the earliest firmly established era of human activity in the New World (10,000 - 8,000 B.C) and involved the spread of similar technologies and subsistence patterns in many parts of the continent. As elsewhere, it is represented in Manitoba by Clovis, Folsom, and Plano traditions and was dependent upon hunting of large game animals, originally extinct Pleistocene mammalian fauna and, later, the giant long-horned bison. This emphasis earned the first North Americans the title of "Big Game Hunters". Because much of Manitoba was covered by glacial ice and the meltwater which formed Lake Agassiz , Paleo-Indian sites are not abundant in the province. Points during the Clovis time, 10,000 - 9,000 B.C., are found in isolated occurrences west of the Manitoba Escarpment. During the Folsom phase (9,000 - 8,000 B.C.) Lake Agassiz dropped in elevation possibly allowing peoples to move into the Red River Plain. It rose again by 8,000 B.C. and began its final retreat approximately 700 years later. The end of this era is associated with the extinction of many big game species as the last Pleistocene ice age gave way to the modern climates of the Holocene.

Extractions: Winnipeg's population exploded between 1900 and 1913 as thousands of immigrants flooded into the city. Answering the Canadian government's invitation to populate the West, new arrivals from Britain and Northern and Eastern Europe headed to the city's North End where housing was cheap and jobs available in nearby rail yards and factories. The Crump Block, part of which is recreated in the Canada Hall, was built on Main Street in 1905 to respond to the North End's growing need for commercial and professional services. Along with two other Canada Hall modules, the Union Hall and the Chinese Hand Laundry, the Crump Block and its two shop fronts, the Book and Music Supply Store and Print Shop, together form a street scene in Winnipeg during the first half of the twentieth century.
