Los Manatees Welcome to the (new and improving) Los manatees/Medicine Brothers website! Los manatees are a group of musicians who play a style known as dreadneck music http://www.losmanatees.com/
Extractions: Born on Halloween 1985 in the hills of Pennsylvania, Los Manatees have been performing for twenty years. For the first few years they were simply an acoustic duo using drum machines, sequencers, and samples. During this period they released two live albums and two live videos. In the early nineties the duo went electric, added a real drummer and bassist, and released their first studio CD, "High Water". Soon after adding a keyboardist and a second drummer/percussionist, the band released their double CD, "Live Medicine".

Manatees are large solitary marine mammals looking something like a cross between a seal and a whale. They are very gentle, and have no natural enemies, as they eat only aquatic plants. This film introduces the viewer to the manatee with stunning underwater cinematography showing all aspects of their lives, from eating, sleeping and playing, to nursing their young and showing their curiosity towards humans. This natural curiosity causes many manatees to die each year because of laceration by boat propellers. Furthermore, loss of habitat is taking its toll on the manatees at an alarming rate. It is now believed that there are perhaps less than 2500 of these animals remaining in the United States, and that extinction could come as early as the year 2000, unless steps are taken immediately. This film addresses the threats facing the manatees and some of the steps which have been taken to protect them. Filmed almost entirely in the state of Florida, this educational film offers a rare glimpse into the watery world of one of the most endangered marine mammals on Earth. "Manatees and How They Live" is the stirring story of the struggle for survival facing the manatees of Florida and the Caribbean.
Sirenian Evolution: Elephant To Sea Cow (Manatees) Astonishing photographic evidence of similarities between modern sea cows and elephants. Including photographs with celebrity LeVar Burton from Reading http://www.edwardtbabinski.us/manatee/sirenian_evolution.html
Extractions: "The Sirenia [which includes the sea cow / manatee - E.T.B.] form a very distinct group of mammals, and one of the most remarkable peculiarities in the existing dugong and lamentin is the entire absence of hind limbs without even a rudiment being left; but the extinct Halitherium had, according to Professor Flower, an ossified thighbone "articulated to a well-defined acetabulum in the pelvis..."

Extractions: By: Craig Fugate I was paddling on the Wakulla River May 19th, starting out from Wakulla River Park in St. Marks. I spotted the Manatee family about a mile north of the US 98 bridge. When I saw them I was the only boat in the area. As Florida Law prohibits harassing or disturbing manatees, I paddled to their left and anchored myself in the hydrilla near the left bank. Sitting still, I began to take their pictures. They began moving towards my red kayak. The family was in no hurry and seem to be interested in the kayak, coming up and gently examining me and my kayak. Around the bend I heard a group of paddlers coming and so did the manatees. They began moving off and so did I. Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978 , which states: "It is unlawful for any person, at any time, intentionally or negligently, to annoy, molest, harass, or disturb any manatee." This page tells of several easy ways for you to do this. Crystal River - Homossassa River The Crystal River - Homosassa River area on Florida's Gulf Coast is the best place to readily find manatees. It's the home of the largest natural manatee sanctuary in the western hemisphere, and the biggest herd of manatees. The local businesses have raised manatee encounters to a major industry, so you can still swim with manatees in this area of the state. This practice is frowned on by the Marine Patrol everywhere else. Besides ready access to manatees, you'll get a lot of useful advice, whichever method you choose .

Introduction To The Sirenia The West Indian manatees are currently in danger of also becoming extinct. Subsequently, the manatees of South America entered these areas in the http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/mammal/mesaxonia/sirenia.html
Extractions: Sirenians are slow and passive mammals of tropical and sub-tropical waters. Their large thick bodies betray their heritage as relatives of elephants. There are only five living species of sirenians, known collectively as "sea-cows", including the dugong and the manatees. Until about 1770, an additional species known as the Stellar Sea-cow ( Hydrodamalis ) existed along the Eastern Pacific coast, but the last of these were hunted to extinction for their meat and fat in by American explorers. The West Indian Manatees are currently in danger of also becoming extinct. The first Sirenians appeared in the early Eocene in Europe, but by the close of this epoch, they had spread to tropical Asia and North America. Dugongs were the prevalent group in the Caribbean and Mediterranean until the Late Miocene, when all but the Indo-Pacific species went extinct. Subsequently, the manatees of South America entered these areas in the Pliocene. Sea-cows are herbivores that graze on sea-grasses and related plants, though some will eat algae and floating monocots, such as
Extractions: High speed boating, in-water explosions, materials dumped in state waters etc., can have an impact on manatees and their habitat. In most cases of filming, a permit from the DEP is required (see DEP Water and Wetlands section). In some cases, a statutory variance from the FWC may also be needed to allow access to an area or to allow higher speedboat operation than otherwise allowed by rule. Off Limit Areas Or Locations There are some portions of state waters that have been designated as "motorboats prohibited" or "no entry" zones for manatee protection. However some of these designations only apply during the winter months. Please contact the FWC directly for information on these zones. Please contact the FWC directly for information on these zones or visit the Manatee GIS Speed Zone Map Library Time Limitations Or Constraints Manatee protection zones are seasonal in some locations and may only preclude access or high speedboat filming in certain areas during the winter. In some circumstances, a variance may be issued to allow activities that would otherwise be prohibited. Due to the requirements of the variance process (§120.542, Florida Statutes), requests for a variance should be made no less than 90 days before the activity needs to be conducted. Agency Contact
Outdoors: Swim With The Manatees In Crystal River When the winter wind blows, manatees seek shelter in warmwater You can swim with the manatees on your own, but a guide is helpful if you are new to the http://www.sptimes.com/News/050500/Outdoors/Swim_with_the_manatee.shtml
Extractions: When the winter wind blows, manatees seek shelter in warm-water sanctuaries like King's Bay. These slow-moving marine mammals look huge, but don't worry, they are among the gentlest members of the animal kingdom. After decades of human contact, the harmless vegetarians have grown accustomed to people. But before you swim with the sirenians, learn a few things about their behavior. Manatees spend most of their time eating, sleeping and moving from one patch of weeds to the next. Like people, they have personalities. Some like humans, others don't. Be aware of this. If a manatee swims away, don't chase it. Use snorkel gear. Leave your scuba tanks at home, because air bubbles frighten manatees. If possible, wear a wet suit. You'll be more comfortable, hence more patient. You are more likely to have a pleasant encounter with a manatee if you don't rush it.
