Extractions: READ INTRO TEXT UNESCO has designated the main Megalithic Temples of Malta and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum as WORLD HERITAGE SITES. The following is an extract from the Reports of the 4th (1980) and the 16th (1992) Sessions of the Committee: Seven megalithic temples are to be found on the islands of Malta and Gozo, each a result of an individual development. The Ggantija complex on the island of Gozo is remarkable for its superhuman achievements dating from [the Bronze Age] 3,600 BCE On the island of Malta, the temples of Hagar Qim, Mnajdra and Tarxien are unique architectural masterpieces, given the very limited resources of their builders. The Ta' Hagrat and Skorba complexes bear witness to the development of the temple tradition in Malta. The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is an enormous subterranean structure excavated with cyclopean rigging to lift huge blocks of coralline limestone around the year 2500 bc (3,000 BCE). The Hypogeum, possibly conceived as a sanctuary, has been a necropolis since prehistoric times. The Megalithic Temples of the Maltese islands are on the prestigious World Heritage Sites list, but a few people know about these prehistoric free-standing stone structures in the world which are much older than the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. This Web site is being constructed to give information about these sites and the other temple sites in Malta that are not on the UNESCO list.

Extractions: A Summer Snack and A Winter Dip Pasta Poultry Antipasto ... Lenten Sweet It is not my intention to enter into any long discussion or controversy on Maltese cuisine. On the contrary, my sole intention is to give recipes that are mainly my favorites but which I am sure will please those who try them out. However it is a pity that most of our good restaurants in Malta do not offer Maltese old-fashioned cooking as part of their menu. Pity! A few do. Rabbit is a specialty in Malta and one finds many places where one can enjoy this delicacy. As August arrives, one can discover a hundred ways of cooking lampuki , the Mediterranean Dorado which is also becoming popular in Italy. There are other if not better fish for those who like a finer type of fish, such as the bass, the bream the grouper, the dentex or John Dory. Most fish restaurants offer a royal sea-food platter which is a mixture of shell fish, octopus (another Maltese favorite) and small fish. Times change, so do our habits. That is why we now have a mixture of the old, the new and the imported type of cuisine. Malta boasts of some very good chefs who won prizes in international competitions. We also have good local wine and local beer.

Extractions: CAPITAL : Valletta. Population: 7146 (1997). GEOGRAPHY : The Maltese archipelago is situated in the middle of the Mediterranean, with the largest inhabited island, Malta, lying 93km (58 miles) south of Sicily and 290km (180 miles) from North Africa. Gozo and Comino are the only other inhabited islands. The landscape of all three is characterised by low hills with terraced fields. Malta has no mountains or rivers. Its coastline is indented with harbours, bays, creeks, sandy beaches and rocky coves. Gozo is connected to Malta by ferry and is more thickly vegetated, with many flat-topped hills and craggy cliffs. Comino, the smallest island, is connected to Malta and Gozo by ferry and is very sparsely populated. The Maltese Islands enjoy a healthy climate, with mild winters and a hot summer season. Cold winds, snow, frost and fog are unknown. Rain falls between September and April. It seldom rains after April, and nearly never in summertime. The temperature averages 57.5 degrees Fahrenheit in winter (Nov-Apr) and 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer (May-Oct). The hottest period is from mid-July through mid-September although the islands seldom get too hot, as hot summer days and nights are regularly tempered by cool sea breezes. There are no mountains or rivers. The majority of fields are small and terraced, but despite lack of rain and other adverse terrain conditions, agriculture is well developed.
