International Schools in Malaysia The original in inhabitants of Malaya, the "Orang Asli" were actually refugees from the south-western provinces of Yunan in China, fleeing conflicts in that area some 10,000 years ago. It then came under the rule of several different regional empires including the Hindu Sri Vijaya and Majapahit from the Indonesian Archipelago. By the middle of the 14th century Islam arrived in Malaya via traders and merchants from India and began to spread rapidly as the local nobles embraced it, the influence of the Hindu Javanese Majapahit Empire was also waning at the time. Early in the 15th century the island of Temasik (Singapore), was being attacked by the Majapahit Empire, a Temasik prince called Parameswara fled his country and founded a small fishing village that would one day be the nucleus of the Melaka empire. Embracing Islam and taking the title Iskandar Shah, the Melaka Sultanate was thereby formed and proceeded to experience exponential growth under the leadership of a dynasty of Malay Muslim rulers. By the middle of the 15th century Melaka's wealth and power had grown to a point where it was considered the center for trade in the south-east Asian region, this was mainly due to its strategic positioning on the Straits of Melaka, right in the middle of the spice trade route and the successful persecution and subjugation of the numerous pirate clans in the region, merchant ships from all over Asia including India, the Middle East and China regularly crowded its harbor. It was also during this time that Malay culture and folklore reached its azimuth. These were the heyday of such historical figures as Tun Perak, Tun Teja, Hang Jebat and of course Hang Tuah.

Ramin ( Gonystylus spp. ), the wood in question, is used to make everything from baby cribs and pool cues to picture frames and decorative trim found in homes and bars around the world. The trees grow only in Malaysian and Indonesian swamp lands and don't take to plantations. Much of what is left today is found in protected areas such as national parks. Fetching upwards of U.S. $1,000 per cubic meter in international markets, the wood lures loggers into protected areas, and once there they cut down everything else of value, according to Sascha von Bismarck of the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) in Washington, D.C. Based in Washington and London, the EIA is an independent international campaigning organization committed to investigating and exposing "environmental crime." Ramin habitat is home to orangutans, a great ape that recent reports suggest could be extinct within two decades owing to the rapid pace of illegal logging.

Extractions: August 7, 2003 Conservation scientist Kae Kawanishi, formerly of the University of Florida in Gainesville, and a team of local assistants, spent three years arranging and maintaining automatic cameras that captured the images they required. The team had the tigers of West Malaysia's Taman Negara National Park in their sights. The 4,350-square-kilometer (1,677-square-mile) park is among Southeast Asia's largest reserves. Difficult to Count Camera traps are a new line of attack for biologists working against the odds to count one of the most awe-inspiring and elusive carnivores. Kawanishi, who completed the project for her doctorate last year, is now submitting her findings for publication in research journals. Despite the relatively pricey machinery (the cameras cost U.S. $450 or more apiece), the method may be widely applicable. "It's been tried successfully in at least India and Sumatra, and theoretically could be used across the species' range," said Kawanishi, who is now with the Malaysian Department of Wildlife and National Parks Division of Research and Conservation in Kuala Lumpur. "The same innovative method is being used to estimate the population size of jaguars in Latin America and amur leopards in Russia," she said.
