The Maine School Library Facilities Handbook is designed to assist school library media specialists and architects in planning new or renovated facilities to meet the continually changing needs of both school children and school communities. Computers and telecommunications continue to transform how students access, use and create information. Goals 2000, the State of Maine Learning Results, Improving America's Schools Act (IASA), and other school reform legislation carry the expectation that all students will be able users of a variety of resources and technologies. Students in our schools must develop the skills needed to locate, evaluate, and use information in order to meet their academic and personal needs, and to participate fully in a technological society. The school library media specialist, in collaboration with classroom teachers, provides a library media program in which individual users, groups of students, and whole classes learn, develop, and practice these skills. These expanded expectations for students, along with the need to follow federal ADA requirements to accommodate the needs of the disabled, necessitate a new look at library design. Library media center facilities must provide for a variety of learning and teaching styles and access to new technologies. The library media center must be flexible and incorporate spaces which can accommodate a variety of simultaneous activities: whole class instruction, individual research, group work, recreational reading, and quiet study. ADA requirements often necessitate more space and special equipment or furnishings to accommodate the needs of physically disabled students. The growing role of school library media centers necessitates additional areas and increased square footage.

Southern Saco Bay shorelines continue to experience severe erosion, resulting in the loss of property and houses in some areas. Scientist Dan Belknap of the University of Maine and colleagues are investigating natural coastal processes that carry sand as well as the role of jetties in accelerated beach erosion. Their results could contribute to beach nourishment planning and shoreline erosion mitigation efforts in Saco Bay. attached, are designed to travel with sand along the seafloor and should wash onto shore within a week of deployment. The seabed drifter project will allow scientists to get information about the direction and rates of sand movement. There will be a wide selection of new paperbacks and old discarded books for sale at reduced prices. The public is invited to attend during the after-school hours Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (2:15-7:45 pm). Teachers are asked to schedule class visits. This is a great opportunity to pick up some good reading before April vacation. All proceeds go to the Library book fund. For more information call the Library at 548-2325. We meet about once a month and read a wide variety of books, some new, some old, some good, some promising-but-not-so-good. We always have a lively time. Join us if you can. Waldo County Poets This April 25th is the 3rd annual Waldo County Young Poet Laureate celebration. This is a celebration of young adult peotry and also a competition to see who are the best of the aspiring poets among us. Prizes are offered to the top writers. Everyone is invited to attend the even held this year at Mr. Paperback and Bell-the-Cat in Belfast: Thursday, April 25th at 7pm. Participants must be age 14-21 and Waldo County residents. All entries must be typed. Your name should be on the backside only. Up to three entries per person may be submitted. No epic poems please. All SDHS students who want to enter the contest, please drop off your entries to the Library no later than Friday, April 12th at 2:15pm.
