A Sword Discovery by Lita Solis-Cohen T he old sword he kept in a cloth sleeve in a closet for 40 years has turned out to be a major find for a Lititz, Pennsylvania, man. Jeffrey DeHart, president of Conestoga Auctions in Manheim, Pennsylvania, said a man stopped by his auction house last summer and told him he had just given his tall-case clock to his daughter and wanted to give his son something comparable. He wondered if an old sword he had in his closet might be worth around $5000. DeHart told him to bring it in and let his arms expert, Russ Pritchard, Sr., have a look at it. "The man was back in twenty minutes," said DeHart. "Russ happened to be here that day." Pritchard said he didn't have his hopes up when he came out to see it. "Things just don't come out of the woodwork anymore, but I nearly fell over when out of this plaid gingham sleeve came a heavy gold-plated sword set with four amethysts. The inscription said it was presented to Rufus King, and it is marked by Bailey and Company, the Philadelphia maker," Pritchard said. It has an imported German blade that was mounted in this country. Bailey & Co. made similar swords for Generals Birney, Blair, Meade, and McCall. The condition is excellent, with only minor blemishes, and the sword and scabbard retain 98% of their original gold plate. The inscription reads, "Presented to General Rufus King by the 19th Regt. Ind. Vols. at their camp on Arlington Heights, Va, As a token of respect for him as a Soldier & Gentleman, March 4, 1862."

Supporters of the U.S. military expressed outrage at the stories of harassment, first reported by a local Maine television station. "Any teacher who harasses a child for the job their parents do to protect all of us and our freedom should be fired, and as far as I'm concerned, deported," said Marc Curtis, Webmaster for www.military-brats.com . "They are supposed to be teaching, not brainwashing," he added.
