Call 1-800-528-NMSA to receive further information about membership and middle level resources. When NOT to Listen to Your Children Of course, listening to your young adolescent is essential, but there are times when this good advice does not apply. Here are some times when parents must take a strong authoritative role. Young adolescents are not adults. They learn to do the right things by observing appropriate adult models. Parents must teach their youngsters about using, saving, and handling money. Insist on a regular savings plan for all money coming in. Give your youngsters opportunities to learn under your helpful guidance. Teach them how to budget, plan ahead, and accept consequences for their money choices. Families Can Beat the Mid-year Blues Q: A: TIPS - On planning appropriate alternatives to middle school proms Many middle level schools still have some sort of formal dance that mimics the high school prom, with expensive and often too-revealing dresses for the girls, tuxes for the guys, dinners at fancy restaurants, and even limousines! While often a legitimate rite of passage for 17- and 18-year-olds, seventh and eighth grade girls and boys need activities appropriate to their developmental level, not practice for activities they will experience several years from now. Given the chance, most young adolescents would NOT choose a prom like activity where they dress up and play roles most are not ready for or comfortable with. If your middle level school still sponsors a prom, it may be time for a more appropriate activity. Here are several alternatives:

Extractions: Adult Education: Literacy and Self-Advocacy Skills New Hampshire: Since 1998, The Right Question Project has worked with the New Hampshire Bureau of Adult Education to integrate our educational strategy into their Adult Literacy programs. More than 60 educators are using the RQP method to help their students build skills to advocate for themselves and navigate systems. An adult educator shared this story about the impact of RQP on one of her students: Nashua, NH: The Nashua Adult Learning Center (ALC) has been particularly successful in using RQP in their Family Empowerment Project. The ALC has shared our method for teaching advocacy skills with staff members, who have then shared it with colleagues and participating families. Many of the families are now interacting more effectively with the programs and services that directly affect them. For example: Family Empowerment Project participants had questions about how the Division for Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) was conducting their assessments and asked the local DCYF supervisor to meet with them to answer their questions.
