Search TEP site A mailing listalso referred to as a listserv or a listis a way of mailing a message once and sending it to an entire group of people. A list can serve any number of people, and as the list owner you have a high degree of control over the makeup of the list, the content of the discussions, and the general usefulness of the list. The Benefits of a Mailing List One major advantage over a newsgroup is the fact that you can set your listserv up to have a limited membership. If a student is participating in an undesirable manner, you can remove him or her from the list, thereby cutting disruptive comments out of the discussion. A listserv also serves very well to broadcast messages to a large number of people. You have more than likely received messages with pages of addresses at the top. This can be infuriating for the receiver and often leads to messages being ignored. Using a listserv helps to prevent this problem.

Pmjs Index 1999 as the premodern Japanese studies mailing list. BUNGO texts Thirteentexts for teaching/learning classical Japanese, with vocabulary lists. http://www.meijigakuin.ac.jp/~pmjs/
Extractions: pmjs is an interdisciplinary forum for those doing research into earlier periods of Japanese art, culture, history, religion and literature. Founded in Sept. 1999 as the "premodern Japanese studies mailing list," it is now known by its acronym. As of August 2005, there are over 670 members worldwide. The lingua franca of the list is English. You can subscribe to get mail as it is sent out or by daily or weekly digests. A Japanese digest is now also available. Members can access password-protected "logs" to read messages sent to the list. The index to these logs requires no password, and gives a good idea of the range of our discussions. See also the index to Japanese digests . More than fifty "threads" (discussions) can be read in the public archive. A major project of these pages is a bibliography of translations from classical Japanese. Recently added: (1) Additions to PMJS papers : "Reading the New Ballads: Late Heian kanshi poets and Bo Juyi" by Ivo Smits; "The Rise of the Modern Japanese Novel: Towards a neo-Dawinian approach to literary history" by Michael Scanlon; and "The Possession of Ukifune" by Royall and Susan Tyler. Extractions: Electronic mailing lists are widely used as a means of communicating information and for generating discussions, and in higher education (HE) this is no exception. A browse through the various lists at jiscmail is an indication of the vast number of mailing lists currently available in UK higher education and the wide range of topics they cover. A similar situation is to be found in many other countries. But how successful are mailing lists in HE? Are they effectively used? The following summary of comments made by 'deliberators' in 1996 gives an idea of some of the reasons why staff in HE do or do not use mailing lists, why some are lurkers and others are active contributors. Summary of comments on mailing lists, 1996 In 1996 an email was sent to the deliberations news mailing list asking some key questions on the value and use of mailing lists in education. This link takes you to the questions asked, responses from readers and a summary of their responses. A link to comments from readers since January, 1997 can be found under "Readers'Comments" below. Towards the end of 1996 Sanjay Rao, formerly a staff member in DeLiberations, wrote this article in which he discussed some of the advantages and limitations of the internet, including mailing lists, as a means of discourse among academics. This link takes you to the full text of the article and comments by a number of readers.
