More Sixteen Exhibitions Bound by a Common Thread by By Jen Meyer - Photo courtesy of the Regional Arts Commission Posted On: 09/01/2005 E-mail This To A Friend! This month, a consortium of 16 local galleries and arts institutions will present its sixth installment of Innovations in Textiles, a biennial event centered on contemporary fiber art. This years program boasts the largest number of participants in its 10-year history. Exhibiting the work of 125 artists from across the United States and Canada (though more than half are locally based), the presenting venues from the Saint Louis Art Museum to Three Sinks Gallery are as diverse as the works to be mounted within. I was pretty foggy on what exactly constitutes textile and fiber art. After a few cursory searches on Google, its clear that defining what it is and what it is not is an ongoing debate amongst those who create, present and collect in this genre. The hard-and-fast definitions of many artistic disciplines have become increasingly more blurry (hence the popularity of the catch-all multimedia designation), so the best loose definition is the one most often favored: Textile is fabric, fiber is whats used in creating the fabric and the art is in either the creation of something using the fabric, or the technique traditionally used in the fabrication.

Webster, Ph.D., is the co-author, with Dr. Darrell Cole, of The Virtue of War: Reclaiming the Classic Christian Traditions East and West , published in 2004 by Regina Orthodox Press. The book explains the moral teachings known as the ?justifiable war tradition,? and their importance today. In The Virtue of War , Fr. Alexander argues that: We need not have any moral qualms about the war against international Islamic terrorism. . . . As the vanguard of Western civilization, we Americans and our allies in the ?coalition of the willing? are duty-bound to lead the counterassault against the evil scourge of anarchic, nihilistic terrorism. . . . The virtues of prudence, courage, justice, and charity demand that we continually prepare to resort to force of arms in accordance with the highest moral teachings of historic Christendom, both East and West. . . . Orthodoxy developed a realistic justifiable war tradition firmly grounded in natural law and the ancient Christian virtue tradition. . . . It is precisely the synthesis of idealism and realism, of vision and power, of mysticism and justice in the Orthodox justifiable war tradition that might speak forcefully to the role of the United States in the contemporary world.

Extractions: Time and Newsweek have been favourite sources of teaching material at advanced levels for several reasons: But teachers have a decisive role to play as "mediators" (Williams and Burden: 1997) to help students cope with the challenge of reading these texts. First of all, we have to be aware of the "house style" of these publications. Then, we have to design lesson plans which train students to deal with the peculiarities of this style, those that hinder and those that facilitate reading comprehension. In other words, we have to teach how to read Time and Newsweek as particular examples of authentic journalistic style. The cognitive process of determining the gist of the story will trigger the students' comprehension strategies: students will activate their relevant world knowledge and they will start anticipating the content of the story. The interplay between prior knowledge, new information and predictions will probably create a moment of cognitive uncertainty, so, at this point, a natural communicative task would be to allow students to discuss their guesses in pairs, which, in turn, will be very favourable for the dynamics of the class, as it will introduce a break of oral interaction in the reading comprehension lesson.

A simple way to get students talking and sharing ideas, predicting the content of your lesson and so arousing their interest is the following: Cut or copy magazine titles from a range of magazines - football, fishing, computer, teenage, business, mother and baby, housekeeping etc. and put them randomly onto the floor or board. In pairs the students have to count how many different types of magazine titles they see and try and work out what each magazine is about. After comparing answers with other pairs and feeding back as a whole class you can get them to say which ones they're more interested in and why. You can then lead onto their reading habits.

In the distance, I can see a bulls-eye planted in front of a Himalayan landscape. Slowly I lower the bow until the arrow is fixed on the target. For a second, I overcompensate and the arrow points toward the ground. I catch my breath, pull the bow up, and then release. The arrow sails across the virtual terrain and lands with a small flash at the center of the bulls-eye. Heres the catch: Im not aiming that arrow with a joystick, or a keyboard, or a mouse. Im aiming it with my mood. Illustration by Leo Espinoza Technically, Im directing the arrow by altering my physical statethe electrical resistance at the tips of my fingers and my heart rate. Im hooked up to a biofeedback system: three sensors worn like rings around my fingers and wired into an ordinary personal computer. The sensors read the galvanic skin response of my fingertips and my pulse. Increased galvanic skin response and heart rate usually accompany active states of awareness, as in the sweaty palms of the fight-or-flight instinct. Lower levels suggest relaxation. My virtual archery session is part of The Journey to Wild Divine , a new interactive CD-ROM that turns your PC into a device for focusing your energy and reducing stress.
Extractions: New York The growing organization and clout of the intelligent design movement and the prevalence of opinion that humans did not develop from an earlier species are beginning to alter the way that most fundamental tenets of biology are presented in public schools, TIMEs Claudia Wallis reports in this weeks cover story (on newsstands Monday, August 8). New laws that in some way challenge the teaching of evolution are pending or have been considered in 20 states, including such traditionally liberal bastions as Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania. This week in Kansas, a deeply conservative state Board of Education is expected to accept a draft of new science standards that emphasize the theoretical nature of evolution and require students to learn about scientific criticisms of the theory. The proposed rules, which wont be put to a final vote until fall, would also alter the states basic definition of science. While current Kansas standards describe science as the human activity of seeking natural explanations for what we observe in the world, the new language omits the phrase natural explanations, leaving the door open, critics say, for the supernatural as well, TIME reports.
