The island's famed lemurs and other fauna and flora found nowhere else in the world, are explained by its physical isolation. But the unusual cultural mix that underlies Madagascar's sensational palette of musical styles reflects the brave souls who came to live in this vast, wild, beautiful land. Its isolation means that most of its mammals, half of its birds, and most of its plants exist nowhere else on earth. The new findings, published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, show that the human inhabitants of Madagascar are similarly unique - amazingly, half of their genetic lineages derive from settlers from the region of Borneo, with the other half from East Africa. Archaeological evidence suggests that this settlement was as recent as 1500 years ago - about the time the Saxons invaded Britain. "The origins of the language spoken in Madagascar, Malagasy, suggested Indonesian connections, because its closest relative is the Maanyan language, spoken in southern Borneo," said Dr Matthew Hurles, of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "For the first time, we have been able to assign every genetic lineage in the Malagasy population to a likely geographic origin with a high degree of confidence."

The 587,041 km2 of land were once covered with green rainforest, but the slash- and-burn techniques of the Malagasy farmers, later aggravated by commercial exploitation of the rainforest has led to heavy erosion, which has exposed the laterite soil all over the island. Because of this Madagascar is now called the "Red Island". The remaining rainforest is to be found in the northern part of the island and on the east coast. The destruction of the endemic vegetation of Madagascar has left behind its red wounds especially in the south, where the environment can best be described as a semi-desert. The third type of vegetation on the island, that will remind the visitor a lot of Asia, is seen on the central highlands, which is the heart of the rice-production of the island. I do not really want to walk a tightrope here by joining in this discussion and, as I can conclude from her book, Kouwenhoven has not chosen this path either. In her "the Red Island" she takes the 18 officially acknowledged ethnic groups as reference points in the descriptions of the various parts of the island.

While the on-screen jungle may have been too beautiful to be true, Alex the lion takes refuge from his inner predator in the spiky limestone tsingy that is one of Madagascar's specialities and seen in national parks such as Ankarana and Bemaraha. The lemurs were all recognisable species, even though King Julien should be Queen Julienne, and the oh-so-cute mouse lemur, Mort, who we first meet as the protein in a tossed salad being prepared by the villainous "fossas", is as appealing in real life. The fossa is indeed the lemur's main predator, so this part is accurate. The film also shows a recognisable Parson's chameleon and a leaf-tailed gecko, both unique to Madagascar.
