This is the highest number in eastern Africa where four countries Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, and Ethiopia are experiencing what the report termed high language mortality. AFRICANEWS brings the story of one person whose community is extinct. When asked about his ethnicity, 10-year-old Jeff Machogu has no reservations. Im a Luo, he says with a chuckle. His father, Robert Oduol, one of Kenyas top journalists, just shakes his head in amazement as Jeffs younger brother, Roy Odhiambo, screams in the background, Im also a Luo. The two boys are firmly convinced that their family is Luo Kenyas second-largest ethnic group because they speak the language, observe the communitys customs, and have a rural home near Lake Victoria, which is the heartland of the Luo. However, the boys father knows otherwise. My family, he told AFRICANEWS, is of Bantu origin, having descended from the Suba ethnic group, a Bantu community that fled to Kenya and Tanzania fearing political persecution in Uganda in the 16th century. Ron Karenga (aka Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga) invented the seven-day feast (Dec. 26-Jan. 1) in 1966, branding it a black alternative to Christmas. The idea was to celebrate the end of what he considered the Christmas-season exploitation of African Americans. According to the official Kwanzaa Web site as opposed, say, to the Hallmark Cards Kwanzaa site the celebration was designed to foster "conditions that would enhance the revolutionary social change for the masses of Black Americans" and provide a "reassessment, reclaiming, recommitment, remembrance, retrieval, resumption, resurrection and rejuvenation of those principles (Way of Life) utilized by Black Americans' ancestors." Karenga postulated seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith, each of which gets its day during Kwanzaa week. He and his votaries also crafted a flag of black nationalism and a pledge: "We pledge allegiance to the red, black, and green, our flag, the symbol of our eternal struggle, and to the land we must obtain; one nation of black people, with one G-d of us all, totally united in the struggle, for black love, black freedom, and black self-determination."

Our particular project addressed a problematic attempt to re-introduce indigenous food-crops in the drought-prone semi-arid and arid areas of Machakos (East Kenya). Specifically, we sought to understand why the Sorghum and Millet Improvement Program (SMIP) that had tried to promote the cultivation of indigenous sorghum failed, and local people continue to grow maize although it keeps failing in their harsh environment and brings them recurrently to the brink of famine. We approached this question by casting our theoretical and empirical net as wide as possible, using time and other resources that policy makers and implementers rarely have at their disposal. We questioned received assumptions underlying SMIP, including the informing images of Third World rural women , subsistence farmers , and indigenous crops and people, and not least the gap between such stereotyped representations and the realities of late 20 th -century rural Machakos. We argue in this paper that sweeping generalizations about rural African people, their indigenous knowledge, and their gendered labor and households, misled the program, deflecting it from directions in which it could and can in the future be effective. We illustrate the advantages of paying attention to cultural differences, not least between donors and recipients , and the fruit of inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue.
