Canray Fontenot, Creole musician, St. Landry Parish Everybody's got to die for himself. No, I ain't afraid of dying. If I don't get well, I'd just as well I died . . . God gave me the gift to play and I'm going to do it as long as I can. Robert Pete Williams, Bluesman, Maringouin, West Baton Rouge Parish Unit Introduction People around the world have long taken note of Louisiana's complex, fascinating, and rich musical traditionsfrom the African and African-rooted rhythms of Congo Square in New Orleans to the country sounds of the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport to the Cajun beat of Fred's Lounge in Mamou. Louis Armstrong, Irma Thomas, Clifton Chenier, Jimmy Davis, Michael Doucet, Ellis Marsalis, Lucinda Williamsthese are only a few of the names associated with Louisiana music. And zydeco , and jazz , as well as other forms, experienced some of their most important developments in Louisiana. Such seminal music comes not only from stages and sound studios but also from homes, religious halls, fields, city streets, and bayous all over the state. Like its complex foodways, Louisiana's music emerges from diverse cultures thathave come together over 300 years, ever since Europeans settled beside many Native tribal groups in the state.

Now, I would expect if you have a different culture, that you would feel the same about yours as I feel about mine. Dewey Balfa, Acadia Parish Unit Introduction When you research and document the culture of your communities, you are undertaking fieldwork. You might do this through interviews, photography, audiotaping, videotaping, sketching, or research. There are so many educational advantages to conducting fieldwork with your students that you won't want to pass this opportunity up! Fieldwork builds students' communication skills and enhances their analytical skills. It also builds creativity in students. Extractions: Last July, Louisiana Governor Mike Foster, a Republican, signed a $2.65 million line item in the state budget that authorized significant new funds for school-based health centers. This would not be so unusual unless one takes into account that, only a few years before, Las Vegas odds makers would have cast the probability of this outcome as something approximating the cancellation of Mardi Gras. What happened over time in Louisiana was due, in large measure, to superb public relations work, and it's symptomatic of a trend that has seen school-based health centers grow from 350 nationally in 1992 to nearly 900 this year. School-based healthcare that addresses a wide range of health problems traces its origins to the early 70s when medical visionaries in Boston, St. Paul and Dallas independently recognized that bringing healthcare to children in schools could overcome barriers to needed care. For many children, health problems - from sports injuries to depression, from asthma to substance abuse -stood a much better chance of being prevented and treated in schoo ls than in traditional medical settings. After all, emergency rooms weren't designed to solve basic health problems, and for children who lacked a regular source of care, a doctor's office or a community clinic was either unaffordable or located away from home or school. In the latter case, getting care was difficult for working parents and others who rarely have hours available to arrange appointments, travel to the health provider, and return home hours later.

Extractions: Building Support in a Conservative State: The Louisiana Experience B etween 1992 and 1998, school-based health centers in Louisiana grew from eight to thirty-five. During that time, their chief source of support shifted from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) block grant, to state general fund dollars, which in 1998 exceeded $4 million. "Real growth in funding for school-based health centers has come during the past four years under a relatively conservative Republican governor with legislative Democratic and Republican teamwork," said Jay Dardenne (R), Senate Majority Leader and leading health center advocate. The story of how the legislature first approved general revenue funding for school-based health centers involves timing, luck, and a growing grass roots advocacy effort. Since 1992 the state had funded centers with MCH block grant moneys to address adolescent morbidity rates as well as their low use of health care services. In 1995, Democratic Governor Edwin Edwards was promoting a gambling initiative and wanted to use some of the state's video poker profits to fund crime and violence prevention programs.
