Extractions: Hoagies' Gifted Education Page depends on you ! Please donate today. Thank you. Schools for the Gifted The question is often asked, Are there special schools for gifted children? For highly gifted children? But there are few answers. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. Schools Hail Pastor As A Hero Who Redeemed Teens Elsewhere in Missouri, Agape boarding School and Thanks to Calvary say they And for decades, louisiana locked horns with the New Bethany Home for Girls. http://www.rickross.com/reference/mountain_park/mountain_park8.html
Extractions: By Matthew Franck A half-smiling portrait of a deceased radio preacher steals the attention of all who enter the small lobby of Mountain Park Baptist Boarding Academy. It's the visage of Lester Roloff, who is seen by several Missouri reform schools as a hero in the battle to bring wayward teens to Jesus, while fending off the demons of government control. Mountain Park's Web site proudly says that the school's founder was personally trained by the minister. Elsewhere in Missouri, Agape Boarding School and Thanks to Calvary say they are not Roloff schools, but their leaders praise the pastor's work and display photos of him. Agape has named one of its dorms in Roloff's honor. Roloff, who died in a plane crash in 1982, is perhaps best known for his "Family Altar" radio ministry, which was once broadcast from Corpus Christi, Texas, to more than 140 stations. As his radio ministry grew, the fundamentalist Baptist preacher began reaching out to drug-addicted men and rebellious teens. By the late 1960s, he was taking in dozens of wayward girls, most of whom were pregnant. His philosophy was to immerse the girls in a monastic lifestyle of Bible teachings. He kept the teens in check with the rod of corporal punishment. It was a pattern for dealing with defiant teens that appealed to parents from across the country and is still followed today. But Roloff left another legacy.

Extractions: October 21, 2004 Father Luis Verplancken, S.J., who frequently said For the harvest of the Lord is so abundant and so needed of care, ended his years of caring for others on this earth on Sunday, September 26, 2004 at the Clinica Santa Teresita (the Tarahumara Childrens Hospital) in Creel, Mexico. His funeral mass and burial was in Sisoguichi, on Tuesday, September 28. Fr. Luis was well known by many people in south Louisiana, especially in the New Orleans and Lafayette areas because of his annual visits to attend the Tarahumara Childrens Hospital Fund benefit. Because of his desire to help the Tarahumara Indians to farm at altitudes of over 7500 feet in the Sierra Madre mountains, he obtained a years scholarship to attend the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette early in his priesthood. He made many friends there who helped him realize some of his dreams from that point until the present. It began a network of a group that made many trips to the Mission and from it also came the Tarahumara Children's Hospital Fund that was started in New Orleans by Sidney (S.L.) and Belle Lemarie almost 23 years ago. The TCHF has been the central receiving office for donations from the United States to the Mission. Fr. Verplancken, 78, was born and educated in Guadalajara, Mexico. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1943 and was ordained on the last Sunday of October, 1957, the feast of Christ the King.
