Professionals who are confronting the ethics of genetic engineering in the real world say schools should teach both the science and the ethics of genetics. This growing field, they say, is likely to have a direct impact on students' lives that only science fiction writers could have imagined years ago. A curriculum called Chances' Choices, developed by the Foundation for Blood Research in Scarborough, Maine, begins with the story of Paul and Stacy Chance and their new baby. The Chance family confronts a series of ethical dilemmas involving genetic testing. Betty Ann Wonderly uses Chances' Choices in her regular and honors-level biology classes in Richardson, Texas. "Our scientific expertise has outpaced our ethical concerns with it," says Wonderly. "That's why a lot of [teachers] are pushing ethics. There are lots of questions these kids are going to have to face." Kansas teacher Keith Barnes used Chances' Choices a few years ago in his biology classes, but he has now designed his own human genetics class. Instead of using a textbook, Barnes keeps his eye on newspapers and magazines and downloads information off the Internet.
