    Extractions: Hermeneutics, as opposed to exegesis, is the theory, rather than the practice, of interpretation. Initially concerned with how we interpret texts, hermeneutics in the nineteenth century becomes the theory of understanding itself, dealing with texts only as one example of the event of understanding between persons. Developed originally as a biblical discipline, it begins with the problem of a distance between text and reader that renders meaning opaque. But beginning in the late eighteenth century, when Johann Gottfried Herder introduces an awareness of cultural relativism, and when the expansion of hermeneutics to the study of secular scriptures changes the understanding not only of the classics but also of the Bible as text, this distance comes to be seen in cultural and historical rather than theological terms. Despite the impediment of cultural and historical differences between author and reader, nineteenth-century hermeneutics often has as an ideal the recovery of the text's "true" meaning. Twentieth-century theorists see such differences as constitutive of a text whose meaning is culturally variable. However, we must be wary of drawing too rigid a line between Romantic and modern hermeneutics, not only because the notion of a fixed meaning still has adherents today but also because many of the ideas of such major contemporary theorists as Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur are explicitly or embryonically present in their precursors.
