Port Orford Lifeboat Station After the attack, the submarine conducted a patrol of the us west coast from the entire west coast of Oregon was blacked out, the Cape Blanco lighthouse http://www.portorfordlifeboatstation.org/article1.html
Extractions: On Wednesday morning, September 9, 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-25 surfaced west of Cape Blanco and launched a small seaplane piloted by Chief Flying Officer Nobuo Fujita. Fujita flew southeast over the Oregon coast, dropping incendiary bombs on Mount Emily, 10 miles northeast of Brookings. After Fujita's bombing run on Mount Emily, the I-25 came under attack by U.S. Army Air Corps aircraft, forcing the submarine to seek refuge on the ocean floor off Port Orford. The American attacks were unsuccessful, and Fujita was able to launch an additional bombing sortie three weeks later. Shortly after this sortie, the submarine sank the SS Camden , the SS Larry Doheny , and the Soviet (Russian) submarine L-16. Read the whole story below. The story of the The I-25 was one of eleven Japanese submarines configured to carry a seaplane. The aircraft provided a unique reconnaissance capability, but could also carry two bombs. Although the plane-equipped submarines were primarily intended for reconnaissance and scouting missions, they were heavily armed and capable of surface and submerged attack. The I-25 was the sixth boat of the B-1 type, I-15 class. It was built by Mitsubishi in Kobe, Japan, and completed in October 1941. The submarine was positioned off Pearl Harbor during the attack on December 7, but damage to the aircraft precluded it from conducting scouting missions for the attack.

Extractions: POINT SUR, CALIFORNIA - In a ceremony today at Point Sur National Historic Park off scenic California Highway 1, Secretary of the Interior Gale A. Norton signed documents to transfer Point Sur Lighthouse from the U.S. Coast Guard to the California state parks. The event marked the first transfer of its kind on the West Coast, and she announced other lighthouses to follow in California, Washington, and Hawaii. Noted celebrants at the ceremony included California Resources Agency Secretary Michael Chrisman, state parks director Ruth Coleman, Monterey district park supervisor Phil Jenkins, GSA Regional Administrator Peter Stamison, Coast Guard 11th District Chief of Staff James Hass, U.S. Lighthouse Society President Wayne Wheeler and Central Coast Lighthouse Keepers Association director Doug Williams. "Point Sur Light Station has been in continuous operation for 115 years. It stands as a witness to the journeys of seafarers a hundred years ago and to the migrations of whales today," Norton said. "This is the only complete turn-of-the-century light station open to the public in California. It preserves a sense of the drama and isolation of the chain of sixty California lighthouses begun in 1852 and managed by the Coast Guard until recently."

Granite Marker Commemorates West Quoddy Head Light Stations Easternmost Location By Bob Trapani, Jr. Though all lighthouses in America today continue to stand sentry over our nations waterways, one beacon alone has the distinction of standing further out along the Atlantic seaboard than any other. Kite Aerial Photography - Pt. Bonita Lighthouse The Pigeon Point Lighthouse site provides some information on Pt. Bonita. it relates that the first fog signal used on the us west coast was at Point http://arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/gallery/gal103.html
Extractions: Marin Headands, California The Pt. Bonita Lighthouse is situated at the end of an adventuresome path invloving tunnels and bridges (39K jpg, Canon 24-mm, August 1997). I've had my eye on this lighthouse for some time and have hiked out to its barren point on many occasions. It is a short, but interesting, walk through hand carved tunnels and across suspension bridges. The way takes you past the ruins of a life boat station. Finally you arrive at the very tip of land enclosing the northern side of the Golden Gate Straight. For two years I've approached different folks at the National Park Service people about arranging permission to photograph Pt. Bonita and Alcatraz Island. They are a hard bunch to pin down. On this particular day I just walked out to the lighthouse on a scouting mission. The wind and light looked mighty nice so I worked on convencing the docent that my kite flying would be innocent and unobtrusive. The docent said well maybe, ok, sort of, let's see and I sent the kite up for a trial run. I was able to take a couple of test rolls before I pulled it down. So these August images are test shots. After forwarding copies to the NPS I still haven't secured permission for additional shots. The Pigeon Point Lighthouse site provides some information on Pt. Bonita. For instance, it relates that the "first fog signal used on the U.S. West Coast was at Point Bonita: an Army-surplus, eight-foot long, 24-pounder siege gun from the Benicia Arsenal. The 'fog signal' was operated by a new keeper, one Sgt. Maloney, U.S. Army Ret., who fired the gun every half-hour during foggy weather starting August 8, 1856." Now that would be interesting duty.
