About The U.S Lighthouse Society The United States Lighthouse Society is a nonprofit historical and educational relieving all west coast lightships when they came in for maintenance. http://www.lanternroom.com/misc/uslhs01.htm
Extractions: Modern technology has doomed the classic lighthouse. The Coast Guard, in it's role as custodian, has automated all of the light stations in this country and, in the process, has eliminated the need for operating personnel. Sterile, rotating aero-beacons on monopoles have replaced many of those proud coastline ladies of former years with their sweeping towers of brick and Victorian gingerbread. In selected cases, the Coast guard is licensing some formerly manned and now discontinued light stations to qualified groups. Many of the light stations that were considered as no longer functional have been transfer to various states, counties, or to non-profit groups and are now serving as museums, bed-and-breakfast inns or youth hostels. Although the almost 300-year era of manned light stations in this country has come to an close, those remaining symbols of our maritime heritage can, and should be, preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. With this in mind, the U.S. Lighthouse Society was founded to assist in the restoration and preservation of America's lighthouses and help qualified local groups in their efforts to return the nation's lighthouses to the public domain.

Extractions: When the United States acquired California at the end of the Mexican War, and obtained complete possession of the Oregon Territory from England in the treaty of 1846, there was not a single lighthouse or for that matter, not a single aid to navigation from the southernmost tip of California to the northernmost tip of Washington... there never had been one. This area of the country had no practice for the location or design of the lighthouses, dwellings or outbuildings. The Lighthouse Service reacted and decided to act upon it's own experiences when starting their plans for the construction of the lights that were to protect these rocky and treacherous 1300 approximate miles of coastlines. The design of the lighthouses was to be modeled after the New England lighthouses.

Extractions: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Climbing the spiral steps and looking out from the lantern room, you find yourselfwondering about these curious round houses, these beacons of the brine built along the edges ofearth. How many mariners fighting rough seas sighed with relief when they spotted the beam shiningfrom this lighthouse? How many corrected their course when the mournful wail of its hornreached their ears though thick fog? Did bootleggers decades ago keep the light at starboard on nighttime runs? "They're kind of like America's castles," says Bosun's Mate Chief Gene Hullette, chief of theAids to Navigation team at Coast Guard Station Port Angeles. "To a sailor, a lighthouse meansyou're home. They symbolize a sentinel. It's always there." In an age of satellite navigation systems and radar, lighthouses are less important thandecades ago, but in Washington there are still more than 20 in operation, though they're nowautomated. Others were decommissioned and either demolished, leased to the state for parks orinterpretive centers, or left crumbling to the elements.

You may want to call ahead to insure the vessel will be open at (510) 272-0544. The lighthship is adjacent to the former presidential yacht Potomac , used by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Lightships were important aids to navigation and are an important part of our maritime heritage. They served mariners in this country for 163 years, from 1820 to 1983. Over the years, 116 stations were established along the three coasts of our country (Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific) and in the Great Lakes. That era peaked in 1909 when there were some 56 lightship stations along our coasts. The location of the first lightship station was in Chesapeake Bay, while the Nantucket station was the last to be automated. Lightship stations, with their aids to navigation, were established to show the entrance to a harbor or bay such as the San Francisco station.

Extractions: The oldest American city west of the Missouri River, Astoria (pop. 9,813) is an upbeat mix of lovingly preserved past and busy contemporary commerce. Houses perched atop high hills overlook the Columbia River, creating a favorite backdrop for Hollywood movies, but despite its picturesque appearance, Astoria supports an active commercial fishing fleet and dozens of tugboats guiding tankers and container ships across the treacherous sandbars. As more than a few Astoria bumper stickers proclaim, "We Aint Quaint." Founded by and named after fur-trade magnate John Jacob Astor in 1811, Astoria protected the tenuous American claim to the Pacific coast until the opening of the Oregon Trail brought substantial settlement. By the turn of the 20th century, Astoria was still Oregons second-largest city, but the downturn in both salmon fishing and logging since the end of WW II has caused an economic decline which, as always, town officials look to tourism to overcome.
