Its close proximity to the Gulf provides excellent fishing for red snapper, king, ling and jack fish, plus deep water fishing for sailfish, marlin, tuna, dolphin and wahoo. With the largest and deepest bay system on the Texas Gulf Coast, Port O'Connor has much more to offer to the avid sports fisherman. Favorite fishing spots include Matagorda Bay, Espiritu Santu Bay and San Antonio Bay. These pristine waterways are full of redfish, shark, flounder, pompano, gafftop, whiting, croaker, sheephead, drum, jack crevalle and Spanish mackerel. Most impressive is the "silver king" of inshore game fish, the tarpon. Offshore rigs just five miles away from Port O'Connor docks are excellent places to fish for kings, ling, snapper and dolphin. In addition to the bay and gulf areas, the local area includes undeveloped estuaries: Powderhorn Lake, Coloma Creek, Pringle Lake and Conti Lake. Pringle and Conti offer shallow water wade fishing with an average of a foot-and-a-half to three feet of water. These estuaries have good grass bottoms where shrimp and fish live.
Extractions: This unique refuge was established in 1931 to provide wintering habitat for migratory birds. It is one of the oldest refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System. It encompasses 68,000 acres spread out between Wakulla, Jefferson, and Taylor counties along the Gulf Coast of northwest Florida. The refuge includes coastal marshes, islands, tidal creeks and estuaries of seven north Florida rivers, and is home to a diverse community of plant and animal life. The refuge also has strong ties to a rich cultural past, and is home to the St. Marks Lighthouse, which was built in 1832 and is still in use today. A statue of a great blue heron, done by sculptor Chris NeSmith, was donated by the St. Marks Refuge Association (SMRA) to the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge on November 20, 2004. Completed Soon after taking control of Florida in 1821, the United States Government began constructing lighthouses around the peninsulas 1,000 miles of coast. Floridas first lighthouse was lit on Anastasia Island near St. Augustine on April 5, 1824. There were no towns and very little commerce within Tampa Bay, so there was no immediate demand for a lighthouse in the area. The first recorded request for a lighthouse at Egmont Key came in a petition to the Secretary of the Treasury in December 1833 from residents of Sanibel Island. The petition noted that vessels running along the coast from Key West to Pensacola needed more lighthouses. They requested lighthouses at Cape Romain, Sanibel and at Tampa Bay.
