Lighthouse Tenders Of The US constructed along the gulf coast specifically for lighthouse work. The us coast Guard improved tender deign to make tenders more versatile to http://www.cr.nps.gov/maritime/lhtendersmore.htm
Extractions: The Lighthouse Boards basic design for the largest steam tenders underwent relatively few changes from the 1890s until its successor, the Lighthouse Service (formed in 1910) was merged with the United States Coast Guard in 1939. Between 1892 and 1939, thirty-three of these vessels were built, most of which ranged in length from 164 to 174 feet. The U.S. Coast Guard improved tender deign to make tenders more versatile to fulfill more roles. While the Lighthouse Board and the Lighthouse Service constructed the majority of its tenders to service specific geographic areas, some standardized features were prevalent in the larger tenders. The Coast Guard accepted a tender design based on the 177-foot JUNIPER and modified it for optimal performance. As the country stood on the brink of World War II, the Coast Guard needed tenders that could perform the traditional tasks, as well as national defense-related tasks. The final design of newer tenders resulted in a large class of 180-foot long, highly versatile, single-screw vessels capable of tending aids to navigation, conducting search and rescue operations, towing, carrying cargo, escorting convoys, fighting fires, conducting weather patrols, and limited icebreaking.

Architecture Source: The United States Coast Guard Our first lighthouses were actually given to us by Nature. Sailors sometimes used landmarks such as glowing volcanoes to guide them. In the Ancient World, trading ships were eventually built enabling navigators to sail long distances to buy and sell goods. In the days of wooden ships with sails, the wind and waves could easily push them against the rocks and wreck them. And so, the need for lighthouses as warning signals arose. Today we call people who study (or are interested in) lighthouses pharologists. The name comes from that famous lighthouse. What is a lighthouse?

Extractions: A boarding party from the Revenue Cutter Morris prepares to board the passenger vessel Benjamin Adams on 16 July 1861 about 200 miles east of New York. The Benjamin Adams was bound for New York from Liverpool and carried 650 Scottish and Irish immigrants. The Revenue Cutter Service was originally established to enforce U.S. laws at sea and inspected incoming merchant vessels for compliance with those laws, as is illustrated here. The United States Coast Guard is this nation's oldest and its premier maritime agency. The history of the Service is very complicated because it is the amalgamation of five Federal agencies. These agencies, the Revenue Cutter Service, the Lighthouse Service, the Steamboat Inspection Service, the Bureau of Navigation, and the Lifesaving Service, were originally independent, but had overlapping authorities and were shuffled around the government. They sometimes received new names, and they were all finally united under the umbrella of the Coast Guard. The multiple missions and responsibilities of the modern Service are directly tied to this diverse heritage and the magnificent achievements of all of these agencies. Extractions: Florida has more than 1,800 miles of coastline, more than any other state in the continental United States. To ensure safe marine navigation along that vast stretch of waterfront, Florida boasts an impressive collection of lighthouses, including some of the nations oldest and tallest. There are thirty lighthouses still standing proud in Florida. Most of these have been lovingly preserved and several have undergone complete restoration. Some invite visitors to climb their spiraling staircases and take in the dazzling view from their lofty lanterns. Many others, although their towers arent open to the public, are located in public parks and can be easily viewed at close range. Even the spider-legged reef lighthouses offshore can be conveniently viewed by boat. But in every case, these venerable beacons continue to illuminate the pages of history. Be sure to have your camera handy. This tour explores the entire state, from the Northeast Coast down along the Atlantic Ocean to the Florida Keys, and back up the West Coast along the Gulf of Mexico. The map on pages 58-89 of this booklet illustrates where the lighthouses are located around the state. A complete list of all lighthouses is provided on page 105.

Since then the couple have traveled over all the coasts of the United States looking for lighthouses. T he Shanklins call themselves "the Lighthouse People", and they feel they have earned the title. Some years ago the Associated Press did a story on them. The story was printed in newspapers all over the United States. At that time they had photographed around 200 lighthouses and so, had only a good start on their project.
