LIGHTHOUSE RESOURCE FOR GRADES K -4 THE SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES RELATE TO VARIOUS DISCIPLINES - ART, SCIENCE, LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH, HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY. GOALS 1. To familiarize children with lighthouses as aids to navigation. 2. To have students gain a basic understanding of lighthouse operation and the evolution of lighthouse technology. 3. To make children aware of the historic role of lighthouses and their current status. 4. To teach children the properties of light and how these are employed to enhance the effectiveness of the light signal. The Story of the Lighthouse Many, many years ago (thousands of years to be more exact), people lived m a very primitive wayboth hunting for and growing their own food (there were no supermarkets in those days, no stores at all!). Eventually they decided to explore the water in a boat to find out what the sea had to offer in the way of food. And, what did they find? They found fish and all kinds of other seafood: clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, lobsters, crabs, etc. During the day they could find their way back to the landing place by looking for a pile of rocks that had been left there.

First Great Lakes Legacy Act cleanup begins on the Detroit River Holy Grail of Great Lakes Shipwrecks Found? Of the thousands of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, the wreck of the Griffin is probably the most legendary. For a few reasons. She was built by somebody legendary - French explorer Rene-Robert Cavalier Sieur de La Salle, she was the first European ship to sail the Upper Great Lakes... and she was the first to sink. Actually, she sank on her maiden voyage in 1769, not exactly one of La Salle's bigger success stories. But the mystery she left behind is pretty big - and it has pretty well flummoxed Great Lakes historians for hundreds of years. Shipwreck scholar Steven Herald is the director of the Manistee County Historical Museum. "The Griffin loaded its first and only freight cargo downbound at Green Bay, and there has never been a reliable report of anyone who has seen the vessel since. It left Green Bay and disappeared totally."
Extractions: Wisconsin's Great Lakes Lighthouses The U.S. Lighthouse and U.S. Lifesaving Services (now combined as the U.S. Coast Guard) existed to protect the ships and sailors on the Great Lakes. Lighthouses mark specific points of land, entrances to harbors, or dangerous shallow areas or rocks. At night, a bright revolving light atop the tower shows sailors where they are sailing. Today nearly fifty lighthouses are found along the Wisconsin Great Lakes shores. Although lighthouses prevented some accidents, the government realized it needed to provide men and lifesaving equipment to help rescue sailors when shipwrecks did occur. The lifesaving stations had highly trained crews to watch for and rescue shipwrecks and sailors. Lifesaving crews were very brave, made many daring rescues, and worked at great risk to their own personal safety. Today, the U.S. Coast Guard patrols the Great Lakes, ready to help in an emergency. Lighthouses still light up the night, showing sailors the safe way into port. Read about the tale of the Lucerne shipwreck Door County has more lighthouses than any other county in the United States, and Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has more than any other national park.

In her wickedly funny memoirs of life on a tiny island seven miles off the coast of Maine, The Lobster Chronicles, famed fishing captain Linda Greenlaw devotes a chapter to the Isle Au Haut Lighthouse and its transformation from surplus federal property into her family's summer home and, finally, into a bed and breakfast inn. Greenlaw, in a weak moment of altruism, volunteers to sit on the island's lighthouse committee and describes in acerbic detail all the pitfalls and eccentricities of local politics in a town of 70 vocal residents, 30 of them her relatives. For all of Greenlaw's poking fun at the local feuds and outsiders she dubs "lighthouse freaks," the Isle Au Haut Lighthouse story has a happy endinga deteriorating 1907 lighthouse turned into a success as a bed and breakfast inn.
