Extractions: Block Island sits approximately 12 miles south-southeast off the coast of Rhode Island, squarely astride the coastal sealanes. The Block Island South East Lighthouse has stood atop Mohegan Bluff, high above the Atlantic Ocean, since 1874. The lighthouse and keepers quarters were meant to be showpieces for the U.S. Lighthouse Bureau. They were among the most elaborate built during the 1870s. South East light has been the focus of an intense preservation campaign. Local and national efforts forged a complex partnership to move the structure away from eroding bluffs and restore it to operation, with long-term preservation in mind. Following designs produced by the Light House Board in 1873, the residence and tower were built in 1874 by contractor T.H. Tynan of Staten Island, in the High Victorian Gothic style. The original lighthouse and attached keepers house structures retain a high level of integrity. To prevent it from slipping into the Atlantic as the bluff eroded away, the lighthouse was moved, during August 1993, approximately 250 feet back from the edge of Mohegan Bluffs. As the lighthouse remains within the historic boundaries of the station, the integrity of the light station's setting, feeling, and association has been maintained.

Introduction The Stations More Resources Basic USLSS History Introduction The key point in my involvement with Life Saving Stations came when historian/preservationist/author Van Field contacted me in November 2004 to help him try to save the Lone Hill Station on Fire Island. I had read some USLSS history in researching lighthouses and volunteering at the Fire Island Lighthouse, and heard the stories of former surfman, and now friend, Frank Estler, but had never quite "clicked" on the subject. That began to change when I had to do some research on the Lone Hill station. now I see myself going down the same slippery slope that I hit when I began researching lighthouses. Although life saving stations and the US Life Saving Service are outside my area of expertise, I have come across enough information at this point that I thought it would be beneficial to share it. The USLSS and USLHS have long had connections similarities in duties, personnel, locations, etc. and they both were integrated into the Coast Guard, so it is certainly not out of place to associate them. On this part of the web site, I will try to share the basic history of as many Long Island stations as I can. Don't consider this site the definitive source for Life Saving station information (LI lighthouses, yes; life saving stations, no). But you will get a nice overview of the history and I will strive, as I always do, to make sure that the facts are verifiable to the greatest extent possible. I'll also add more as I learn more I suspect this project is going to grow.

Whilst the amount of work involved in preparing the Bulletin is significant, the satisfaction of being involved, hearing about all the things going on with Australia's lighthouses, and then publishing the news so that everyone can read about it is very rewarding. The Bulletin will return to a monthly publication schedule, and with this issue, has reverted to the original title "Bulletin", rather than "Bulletin/Prism". Prism will continue to include major stories and historical recollections by former lighthouse keepers and so on, whilst the Bulletin will tend to be more news-oriented. Prism is a printed newsletter forwarded only to members - join Lighthouses of Australia now to receive it.

But I wished to see that seashore where man's works are wrecks; to put up at the true Atlantic House, where the ocean is land-lord as well as sea-lord, and comes ashore without a wharf for the landing; where the crumbling land is the only invalid, or at best is but dry land, and that is all you can say of it." Henry David Thoreau, Cape Cod Cape Cod is flatter than much of Kansas, more crowded and faster paced than many suburbs, and the water is generally too cold for swimming. Why then is it such a popular vacation spot? I'm not sure. I don't think the Cape can work its magic over a long weekend. Its charms are out of sync with the modern work hard/play hard ethos. You need to spend enough time there to appreciate the soft light and gentle scenery. The best way to enjoy the Cape is to rent a house on the beach or on a pond, sit in a rocking chair, and work through a stack of novels. A few parts of the Cape are immediately attractive, though. My favorites are the Outer Cape with its dunes, Provincetown for its interesting culture, Martha's Vineyard for its island culture, and Nantucket because I've never been there but it sounds peaceful and allegedly the rich people haven't been able to assert ownership of every scrap of sand. In this article, we'll take a brief look at some scenic spots in Barbados, starting from the North. Little Bay, St Lucy The North Coast of Barbados is famous for its beautiful bays and rugged scenery. While you are exploring the north-east of the island, be sure to visit Little Bay. Little Bay is interesting for many reasons. The sand looks different from the sand in the other parts of the island and numerous blowholes spout the sea water high into the air. Rugged cliffs tower majestically above a little pool-like area, where it is relatively safe to swim. If you climb the cliffs, you would get a great view of the north coast. Cove Bay, St Lucy Still in the north is Cove Bay, one of Barbados' favourite picnic spots . It is not very easy to get to because of its location. Nevertheless, when you do get to it, you'll realize that it was worth the trouble. Cove Bay is great for exploring and there are lots of cliffs that are great for climbing. Like Little Bay, you will get a good view of the North coast.

Though the Golden Gate at its narrowest point is but a mile wide, it opens into a bay covering nearly 450 square miles. The bay has not none harbor but dozens along its one hundred miles of meandering shoreline. San Francisco Bay proper stretches from Alviso near San Jose in the south to points San Pablo and San Pedro in the north. Between these two points lies San Pablo Strait. The two islands called The Brothers mark the east side of the strait, a quarter mile off point San Pablo. On the west side are two similar islands named The Sisters. It is not known who named these two sets of islands or mountains in this way. Two islands also called The Brothers lie just south of Cape Mendocino in Humboldt County. The names for the San Francisco Bay islands became official in 1851 when the U.S. Coast Survey used them in preparing the first accurate map of the bay.

Extractions: When Henry Hudson sailed up the North River in search of the Northwest Passage little did he know that someday the river bearing his name would eventually connect the east coast to America's heartland via the Erie Canal. In the years that followed his discovery, river towns used the river to transport their goods to New York City and upstate New York. To help guide these ships, they established a series of post lights to mark dangerous spots along the river, but this unorganized system proved unreliable. When the Erie Canal opened in 1825 and commercial river traffic increased, the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment felt the need for a more sophisticated system of lights. In 1826, the Stony Point Lighthouse was the first to shine its light on the Hudson, starting a system of lights that eventually grew to 14 lighthouses and numerous post lamps to guide mariners safely the length of the river. The seven lighthouses that exist today along the Hudson River are a tribute to the preservation groups that have worked long and dedicated hours in restoring, preserving and keeping these maritime treasures alive. The Hudson River Lighthouse Coalition is dedicated to enhancing these efforts and guaranteeing that the Hudson lighthouses will shine forever.
