Many lighthouses and places of associated interest will be open to the public, and there will be special events at lighthouses all around the world. Over the past 7 years, International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend (ILLW) has grown to over 370 lighthouses in some 51 countries around the world participating in the event. The event is always held on the 3rd full weekend in August and it now coincides on the Sunday with International Lighthouse Day. The lighthouses are "activated" by amateur radio operators, and the basic objective of the event is to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships and their need for preservation and restoration, to promote amateur radio. Hams set up their gear in or next to a lighthouse / lightship, and make contact with other lighthouses. The public is invited to participate, to learn about radio and the importance of lighthouses and their preservation.

Add to that the trails at the Cape Cod National Seashore in Eastham and you have an unequalled opportunity for sightseeing and getting excersise. The Cape's famous Nauset Beach is only a 5 mile pedal from the hostel. Scouting and hostelling have a long history of mutual support. They are similar in their mission to foster experiential learning and exploration of the world, leading to personal growth and ultimately to a more informed citizenry. As Germany’s largest coastal town, Bremerhaven is a bustling center of commerce and an exciting port of call. In 1827, residents of the city of Bremen founded this new port town, creating a two-city state, the only one of its kind in Germany. Shipbuilders flocked to the deep-water harbor and international trade flourished in the new town. The temperate climate of this central European locale has only strengthened the growth of Bremerhaven. As a result, the increase in traffic created a need for lighthouses along the coast.

It has been preserved as a monument to the Lighthouse Service by a special act of Congress. The legislation ensures that the station will always be manned and cared for by human hands and will uphold the traditions of lightkeeping. The second keeper, Robert Saunders, drowned just days after taking the job. Site of first foghorn. Third Keeper John Hayes asked that "a great gun be placed on the Said Island to answer ships in a Fogg." He probably wasn’t too happy when it got added to his duties, but didn’t receive more than his salary of 50 or so pounds. The cannon still exists at United States Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. In 1720 Hayes set fire to tower, and was assessed three years pay 216 pounds but managed not to have to pay it. In the 1840’s a keeper named Tolbia Cook set up a cigar factor on Brewster Island and brought young women out to manufacture what he called "Spanish Cigars" under miserable conditions till his fraud was discovered. The lighthouses are located in the area without available electricity sources. They are powered by so-called radio thermoelectric generators, or RTGs, in which the strong strontium source of energy produces heat to power a generator. The generator finally produces electricity to power the lamp in the lighthouse.
