The demand for the photonics laboratory space has increased with the introduction of the coursework postgraduate programs in photonics developed and implemented by Professor Michael Gal. A major capital works program, managed by Gabriel Caus, has ensured the entire refurbishment of the optoelectronics teaching laboratory: new rooms, new power and lighting, and a new holography work area. The laboratory now enables students to use modern equipment to study and understand the new age of information technology and communications. The laboratory can cater for a wider range of students, including: physics majors in their final undergraduate year; photonics engineering students in their third and fourth year; post-graduate coursework students completing the laboratory segment of their programs; and medical and ophthalmology students studying the properties of lasers. The available experiments cover a wide range of topics: One of the big problems previously was interference from stray light. A major feature of the new laboratory fit-out is the special purpose lighting designed by John Tann. On each of the optical tables in the laboratory, a series of individually dimmable spotlights permits adjustment to just the right level of foreground lighting. This allows students to perform an experiment without causing stray light to interfere with nearby experiments.

Extractions: The first photonic logic components built using laboratory test models of Photonic Transistors produced the Boolean logic functions: XOR (pronounced 'exclusive-or', NOT , and an OR According to the rules of Boolean switching logic, various combinations of only two of these basic functions are all that are needed in order to construct all of computing! That first transistor was also used to produce an elementary photonic signal amplifier for increasing the amount of energy in a modulated input beam. Amplifiers are also needed in order to interconnect working logic functions into functioning computers. Of these, the component with the fewest number of complications in its output configuration was the NOT function. In electronics, the NOT is called an 'inverter.' In photonics, when its input beam is on , it produces an off output...and an off input produces an on output. Since at least one of the transistor's inputs must be on in order to produce energy in the output, the 2nd input beam accomplishes exactly what all the 'experts' said was impossible. One beam was used to turn another beam on and off without some electronic do-hickey in the middle.

As we all know, this is because Maxwell's equations (the equations of light) are linear. Light cannot interact with light usually. But it can under the right circumstances. Now take a single laser and split it into two coherent beams of photons. If these laser beams cross inside a type of a nonlindar crystal, they mutually influence each others propagation. In some cases, one beam will donate its photons to the other beam. This results in nonreciprocal energy transfer between the beams, and constitutes one of the few instances of optical amplification without stimulated emission. The control of light by light is the optical analog of the control of electgrons by electrons in transistors. One of the great challenges facing quantum optics today is the search for the appropriate medium in which photons can control photons. The discovery of such a medium would open to way for photonic computers. The electronic revolution of the 1960's is now giving way to the photonics revolution. Almost all high-data-rate systems in use today use photons to carry information. Even microprocessors in your personal computers are on the verge of using photonics to bus information and to provide masssively parallel interconnections. Hybrid electronic/photonic microprocessors are only about 5 years away from the marketplace.
