Purpose Thomas Jefferson had long considered the project of a western expedition, and as president he contemplated the matter in earnest and discussed it with his private secretary, Capt. Meriwether Lewis . When Congress approved the plan in 1803 and appropriated money for it, Jefferson named Lewis to head it, and Lewis selected William Clark as his associate in command. The purpose was to search out a land route to the Pacific, to strengthen American claims to Oregon territory, and to gather information about the indigenous inhabitants and the country of the Far West. Before the long march was begun, the Louisiana Purchase was made, increasing the need for a survey of the West. The Expedition The men were gathered and in the winter of 1803â4 were trained in Illinois across the Mississippi from St. Louis, the starting point. In May, 1804, they set out up the Missouri, and the next winter was spent at the Mandan Native American villages (near present Bismarck, N.Dak.). In 1805 the hardest part of the journey was made. After reaching the Three Forks of the Missouri River (and naming the three branches after Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin in loyalty to the administration), they followed the Jefferson as far as they could. Extractions: The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia Lewisia rediviva Pursh In his 1813 book Flora Americae Septentrionalis Lewis and Clark specimens are found primarily at The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia (abbreviated here as PH), with a smaller number of sheets at the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew, England (abbreviated as K). The first thirty collections recorded by Lewis in the winter of 1804-1805, and sent to President Jefferson, are now lost. They disappeared after they were received by the American Philosophical Society in 1805. Some species mentioned by Pursh as having been found by Lewis and Clark are not now represented by known specimens. These could be anywhere, but if extant then most likely they will be found in some European herbarium. Some of the plants mentioned by Pursh, but now lacking supporting specimens, are listed here, especially those native species that can be readily identified. A "most tremendous looking animal, and extreemly hard to kill," wrote Lewis in his journal on May 5, 1805. Clark described the grizzly as "verry large and a turrible looking animal." Clark and another member of the expedition fired 10 shots at it before it died. Several tribes of Native Americans had told Lewis and Clark about grizzly bears. The tribes would only attack these great bears if there were 6-10 people in their hunting party, and even then the bears would sometimes kill one of them. The first grizzlies Lewis saw during the expedition were two smaller bears. He and another hunter had easily killed one of them. That day Lewis wrote in his journal that although the Native Americans with their bows and arrows might have problems, the grizzlies were no match for skilled rifleman. He soon changed his mind.
