RB5037 research shows that legal abortion can save women s lives. This research brief describes work done for the Population Matters project of the RAND Labor http://www.rand.org/publications/RB/RB5037/
Extractions: However, no survey of American public attitudes on population issues or foreign assistance more generally has been conducted since the ICPD. To address the need for more-current information, RAND's Population Matters program conducted a nationally representative survey of 1,500 Americans. The survey asked specifically about three topics: The survey found that Americans are not well-informed about the statistical dimensions of world population change but are nonetheless concerned about global population growth and its possible consequences. Counter to the perception that Americans have become more absorbed with domestic issues, the survey also showed that a majority of the public59 percentsupports U.S. economic assistance to other countries. An even greater majority80 percentfavors U.S. assistance for voluntary family planning programs overseas. Abortion remains a divisive issue for Americans as it has been for the past 25 years, with about half opposed to abortion in most cases and the other half favoring a legal right to abortion. American support for international economic assistance is at its highest since 1974, when opinions on the subject were first tracked (see Figure 1). Almost six in ten respondents (59 percent) favor U.S. economic assistance to other countries. Eighteen percent favored it very much, 41 percent favored it somewhat. A majority also agreed with the assertion that spending U.S. funds overseas benefits the United States.

BACKGROUND status of the total US population and racial /ethnic groups include state Such information may serve administrative, manage ment, legal, research and http://www.rice.edu/projects/HispanicHealth/background.html
Extractions: Table of Contents Previous page (Introduction) Next page (Background) The occurrence of many diseases, injuries, and other public health problems is disproportionately higher in some racial/ethnic minority populations in the United States. For example, since 1950, mortality has been reported to be approximately twice as high for black as for white infants (7). In the mid-1980s, Mexican Americans were 2.8 times more likely than non-Hispanic whites to be uninsured; and rates of death from unintentional injuries are substantially higher in Native Americans than other U.S. populations (7). Findings such as these are based largely on data from public health surveillance (8). The collection of race and ethnicity information has been an important component of public health surveillance efforts used to identify differences in health status among racial/ethnic minorities. Sources for surveillance information regarding the health status of the total U.S population and racial /ethnic groups include state agencies and multiple federal agencies such as CDC, BC, the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the Indian Health Service (IHS), and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) ( Figure 1). Categories and types of information collected include births, deaths, population size and migration, disease and injury morbidity, health behavior and attitudes and health service utilization. Such information may serve administrative, manage ment, legal, research and evaluation, and archival purposes.

Extractions: Given these obstacles, the following actions seem to be needed: clarify the present availability - or lack thereof - of ethnic statistics in European countries clarify the legal status of ethnic statistics in Europe under both international and domestic law to determine which, if any, legal prohibitions limit the collection and maintenance of ethnic statistics as to those jurisdictions where present legislation impedes reasonable efforts to gather ethnic statistics with privacy safeguards, recommend legal reforms as to all other jurisdictions where present legislation does not impede reasonable efforts to gather ethnic statistics, educate public and policy makers that the law does not bar them from gathering such information, and in all places, address the legitimate non-legally-based concerns of those presently opposed to gathering of ethnic statistics by (i) making clear the problems above caused by absence of statistics (i.e., advocates cannot prove, and governments cannot monitor or combat, discrimination), and (ii) suggesting practical steps (including successful examples employed elsewhere) which might be taken to permit the gathering and collection of such statistics with safeguards which address the legitimate concerns which have been raised. Since there exists a need for ethnic statistics by governments and anti-discrimination advocates, the Steering Committee of Ethnic Statistics Project which consisted of one representative each from COLPI, ERRC, INDOK, LGI and OSI decided to start a program aiming at improving information on the Roma community at the level of local authorities, research institutions and NGOs in order to facilitate the planning of social policies in relation to the Romani population.
Nonlegal Research Nonlegal research. legal research Guides. Updated Aug. 30, 2004. LawyersÂ’ research often encompasses more than legal research. http://lib.law.washington.edu/ref/nonlegal.htm
Extractions: Prepared by Mary Whisner for Bridge the Gap. Lawyers research often encompasses more than "legal research." Litigators, scholars, and policy makers need to know something about the real world so they might need statistics, news stories, scholarship from other disciplines, and information as basic as addresses and phone numbers. Since law touches on so many aspects of life, some legal researcher may need to get information about almost anything from engineering (technical specifications about a piece of equipment involved in litigation, for instance) to medicine, anthropology to zoology. As you work on your various legal projects, be open to nonlegal information. Recognize that you will sometimes need to look beyond legal sources and might even need to leave the law library. Become familiar with some standard tools (for instance, some of the sources we will use today). Remember the tools you used as an undergraduate and in the other work you did before law school. When you try out a new tool, look for a table of contents, an index, and an introduction that explains how to use it.

Extractions: Population : Legal Issues National Population Policy C. STRATEGIC THEMES We identify 12 strategic themes which must be simultaneously pursued in "stand alone" or inter-sectoral programmes in order to achieve the national socio-demographic goals for 2010. These are presented below: (i) Decentralized Planning and Programme Implementation The 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments Act, 1992, made health, family welfare, and education a responsibility of village panchayats. The panchayati raj institutions are an important means of furthering decentralized planning and programme implementation in the context of the NPP 2000. However, in order to realize their potential, they need strengthening by further delegation of administrative and financial powers, including powers of resource mobilization. (ii) Convergence of Service Delivery at Village Levels Efforts at population stabilization will be effective only if we direct an integrated package of essential services at village and household levels. Below district levels, current health infrastructure includes 2,500 community health centers, 25,000 primary health centers (each covering a population of 30,000), and 1.36 lakh subcenters (each covering a population of 5,000 in the plains and 3,000 in hilly regions)
