    Extractions: March 25, 2003 RANKING OF LAW FACULTY QUALITY FOR 2003-04  Ranking based on detailed surveys completed by 150 leading legal academics This latest addition to the Educational Quality Ranking (EQR) site reports the results of a survey of more than 150 leading legal scholars; it thus replaces previous reliance on U.S. News academic reputation surveys (about which more below).  “Objective” measures of faculty qualityper capita productivity and citationsare still available elsewhere on this site (see http://www.utexas.edu/law/faculty/bleiter/rankings02/rankings.html ), and these objective measures correlate rather well with the latest survey results reported here (except for schools like Minnesota and Colorado, which have had significant faculty changes in the interim).  Since high-quality survey data may ultimately be more informative than “objective” measures, it is my intent, for now, to rely on this data.  Since any aggregation rule for combining the results of this survey with objective data about faculty or student quality is also bound to be controversial, the EQR site will cease these aggregations in favor of presenting the individual measures for students to weigh as they deem appropriate.

Prof. Joseph Hoffmann of Indiana University School of Law was kind enough to provide us with some of the data that we analyzed for this report. THE VALIDITY OF THE U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT RANKING OF ABA LAW SCHOOLS Summary Conclusions SUMMARY U.S. News and World Report uses data on 12 factors to make its annual evaluation of law schools. Two of these factors (ratings by academics and ratings by lawyers and judges) involve subjective judgments of school quality. The other 10 factors are based on objective actuarial data, such as the school’s median LSAT score for beginning students and its bar passage rate. US News uses the 12 factors to rank the top 50 schools and assign the remaining 124 schools to three "tiers" of overall quality (with about 40 schools per tier).
