Some may pay privately for such help; others may qualify for publicly funded assistance. Many however rely on the personal commitment of lawyers to ensuring that needs are met regardless of ability to pay. 'Pro Bono is part of the profession and something we should do its as simple as that' The College contributes to the pro bono movement through a range of activities including advice centres, representation units and legal literacy programmes. These initiatives are designed to provide a free service to members of the public alongside (and complementing) other existing provision. Whilst the College is keen to promote services for the public benefit, involving students in pro bono work coupled with structured reflection provides a powerful education. Through such hands-on approaches to study, students markedly develop their knowledge, skills and professionalism. In other words, pro bono work and clinical education are mutually complimentary everyone benefits.

Extractions: Pro Bono Work An important part of our overall responsibility as a leader in the community is provision of free legal services to those in need. Varnum's primary vehicle for providing pro bono legal services is its active participation in the Pro Bono Program of Western Michigan, a program established in 1982 by the Grand Rapids Bar Association and Legal Aid of Western Michigan. Varnum participates in this program by making a financial contribution on behalf of each attorney in the Firm. We also encourage attorneys to accept referral cases through the program by treating time spent on cases in the same manner as billable time. Our commitment to the Pro Bono Program begins with our summer associates, who handle at least one referral case during their clerkship, a unique and positive aspect of our summer program. This sense of responsibility continues with our associate level attorneys, one of whom was recently recognized by ARC of Kent County as the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. Our partners also devote a significant amount of time to the program through supervising younger attorneys and summer clerks as well as through their own representations. Mark Allard, a litigation partner, is currently serving as our pro bono coordinator.

Extractions: Pro Bono Research Group - Woodside Speaker Series Dr. Frank C. Woodside III has contributed generously to the Pro Bono Research Group. The most wonderful aspect of his gift is the endowment that ensures perpetual support for PBRG. The Pro Bono Research Group is able, through his contributions, to provide an excellent experience for law students where they can apply what they have learned in the classroom to issues concerning Americans today. In addition, his gift provides the support necessary for PBRG to present the annual Woodside Speaker Series. 2005-06 Frank C. Woodside III Speaker Series Right to Shelter Co-sponsored by Pro Bono Research Group (PBRG) and the Moritz College of Law While the right to basic needs such as food, medical care, and clothing has been established for very low-income persons, the right to housing has not. Is there a right to affordable housing and shelter? The Moritz College of Law's Pro Bono Research Group will host a symposium as part of the Woodside Speaker Series on the right to housing for low-income individuals and families. The current decrease in available affordable housing coincides with a stagnate number of shelter beds, thereby creating a housing crisis for the low-income and homeless. Local and state housing experts will discuss efforts to address the crisis in affordable housing and national experts will explore the legal right to shelter.
