Extractions: MEMORANDUM OF THE FAMILIES OF THE "DISAPPEARED" IN ALGERIA Introduction The issue of enforced disappearances in Algeria continues to be a matter of grave concern for human rights defenders and for the families of the "disappeared". Over the last ten years, several thousand Algerians men and women from various sections of the population have "disappeared" after having been taken away by members of the security forces. Despite the fear of reprisals, despite intimidation, death threats and repression, the families of the "disappeared" have come together to take action as have many human rights defenders, lawyers and non-governmental organisations to try and find out what has happened to their loved ones. They have launched campaigns at both the national and international level. Campaigning in Algeria The families of the "disappeared" first began their collective action by visiting police stations, gendarmerie and military barracks, prisons and detention centres. Together with lawyers known for their commitment to human rights in Algeria, the families launched the first public actions of the families of the "disappeared" before the parliamentary elections in October 1997, demonstrating in front of the International Press Centre.

These people belonged to the elite of the country. They were leaders of political groups and cultural organizations, former members of the government, editors of newspapers, and well-known journalists. "On Oct 1 1941, the Soviet Union and Germany signed a treaty according to which people could be exchanged; persons of German extraction could repatriate to Germany and Lithuanians from Germany could move to Lithuania. Correction: The Soviet-German resettlement agreements were signed on January 10 and 11 of 1941. They dealt with the selection, resettlement and financial reimbursement procedures. After the war began the relationship was disjoined on bad terms. Germans searched Soviet embassies in Paris and Berlin, after which there were no direct contacts between them. I'm not a web expert, but would it be a sound idea to try to make tapechains work via scan-indie WEB page, so that tape is sent to Erik and then he converts the songs to MPEG? Of course the sound quality is not the same etc, but as far as I understand the idea of tapechains is to give people the possibility to get to know new bands and in case you are looking for quality you'd have to go and buy the CD anyway. With the songs uploaded to the scan-indie page I can have a listen to each one of them and go looking for some more in case I liked the band. What obstacles are there? Don't stone me if you find this idea totally absurd. Of course the sound > quality is not the same etc It's definitely an idea - though the obstacle in this case is really the record labels and companies. They'll probably throw big rocks at me if I put full-length MP3's with their artists up on the web. They're pretty nasty when it comes to that these days. Of course one can always ask the labels first. //Erik Date: Mon, 13 Apr 1998 17:59:13 +0200 From: Erik Soderstrom
