Despite my best attempts to vary my presentation of the grammar, the exercises for homework, and the activities in class, Latin was going over like a lead balloon. So in desperation I decided to develop a few games in an attempt to shake the students out of their lethargy. What follows is a report on some of the games I played last fall or am in the process of developing, as well as some observations about the pedagogical value of including games in introductory Latin. There is undoubtedly much we as classicists can learn from modern educational theorists and cognitive psychologists about the value of using games in our teaching, but it is gratifying when one of our own is so sensible and ahead of his time. Our program's strengths and our country's character and charm have attracted people from all over the world. Sparked by the increasing number of high school students attending the program since 1990, we decided to design a new program dedicated to their specific interests and needs. Program Composition To Top The program combines our well-established Intensive Spanish Program with a number of social and cultural activities geared towards high school students' interests. These activities include lectures on career path development, the college experience, various fields of study and Costa Rican and Latin American culture. The program also includes a number of social activities, ranging from Latin dance lessons to pottery classes and cooking classes to community service. Spanish Instruction To Top Students are tested on day one to assess their current language level. Small homogenous groups are formed, maximum four students per group. Students are exposed to a new instructor for each week of the program. The instruction is entirely in Spanish, and each week, a specific grammatical sequence is presented. The instructors are skilled in blending conversation with grammar to meet the individual needs of the group members. A portion of each day is dedicated to the correction of written homework exercises, and about forty-five minutes to one hour of homework per day is required. Students are frequently moved from one group to another during the program to maintain smooth functioning and to maximize individual progress.
